Policy for School Leavers
Definition
The underlying philosophy of the leavers’ curriculum is based upon the premise that
the final years of a Selworthy pupil’s school life should include preparations for
adulthood and life in the community. This is best achieved by the provision of
learning opportunities that relate as closely as possible to community life.
Principles
$
For this policy to run alongside the policy for the 14 - 19 Curriculum
$
Preparation for community living involves interacting with the
community, shopping, using public transport and amenities plus links
with other schools and colleges.
$
All independent, life skills and skills needed for Careers are seen to be
of paramount importance and are promoted throughout the curriculum
$
It is recognised that each student is unique and has individual needs,
interests and abilities. The curriculum is designed to encompass this.
$
The nurturing of an adult orientated atmosphere in class encourages
maturity on an informal basis. Importance is attached to promoting
individual responsibility.
$
The curriculum is planned to meet individual need and an Individual
Curriculum Plan is set for each student. This is evaluated and new
targets set or old ones revisited every term.
$
The school Scheme of Work will be used to help form the basis of the
Leavers curriculum in English and Mathematics. In Maths there is an
emphasis on skills identified as those most useful in everyday life.
These include the use of money, time, number and measure.
$
Other subjects covered will be approached in a way that is relevant to
young adults, for example:
Science, practical and written work covered on the Cannington
College Link course on animal care and horticulture
Design and Technology, to promote leisure skills and Food
Technology as a life skill
ICT, for leisure and to promote access to other areas of the curriculum
Music, for pleasure and leisure
PE, swimming for pleasure, leisure, health and fitness and personal
care
PSHCE for, social, life and independence skills and to promote care of
self and others, safety, values and attitudes etc.
