CARDBOARD BOAT RACING
DURBAN Marina - 18 & 19 JULY

RULES & REGULATIONS
The ENTIRE boat must be built USING cardboard and duct tape ONLY. Each team
building on-site will be supplied with a limited amount of cardboard and 2
rolls of duct tape. Additional duct tape, Stanley knife, pencil, straight
edge must be provided by contestants. No glue, staples or fastening
materials of any description, other than duct tape, are allowed in the
construction.
Crew costumes are allowed.
BOATS BUILT ON-SITE:
1. Boat building/assembly is to take place on-site on the day of the
event. 2 (tWO) hours will be allowed for boat building, COMmmencing
at NOON.
2. The Boat design is left completely to the builders, with the
exception that NO surfboard style boats will be accepted for entry.
3. The crew compartment CANNOT be enclosed.
4. Decorations are encouraged provided they are not used as structural
or flotation elements.
5. A maximum of 3 people may build A ONE PERSON boat, aND A maximum of 4
may build a 2 person boat.

BUILT OFF-SITE:

Boats may be painted, but paint used must NOT be soluble in salt
water.
4. Boats must be delivered to the construction site by 1Pm on the day of
the race for scrutineering.
EVERY Crew member MUST WEAR EITHER A PERSONAL FLOTATION DEVICE (PFD) or
a LIFEJACKET.
All entry forms and disclaimers MUST be completed in full, with the
relevant signatures.
During competition, all crew members MUST be IN the boat, not towing
it, holding it between their legs, swimming or allowing lifejackets or
PFD’s to provide flotation for the boat.
Boats must remain within the demarcated race area at all times.
NO pets are allowed in the boats.
Sunken or discarded boats MUST be removed from the water and disposed
of in the designated area. Boats that have completed the course must be
removed from the water and disposed of, or removed from the area.
THIS IS A FUN EVENT!! Any behaviour that is deemed to be detrimental to
the event will/can result in disqualification. THE JUDGES DECISION IS
FINAL AND NO CORRESPONDENCE WILL BE ENTERTAINED.

On Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th July, the Durban Boat Show will host Durban’s third
Cardboard Boat Regatta. Families, Student Groups, teams of friends or co-workers can pool
their creativity and boat construction skills to compete against one another and the elements.

I have read and agree to abide by all Rules and Regulations published concerning this event. I
am aware of and agree to assume all risks inherent in my participation in the Cardboard Boat
Regatta. Further, I indemnify and save harmless the Durban Boat and Lifestyle Show and its
Organisers and sponsors, the City of Durban, the Royal Natal Yacht Club and all of its employees
and associates against any loss or expense by reason of liability imposed by law upon the above
entities and from and against claims against the above entities for damages because of bodily
injuries, including death, at any time resulting therefrom, accidents sustained by any persons or
person on account of damage to property rising out of or in consequence of the Cardboard
Boat Regatta whether such injuries or damage to property are due to any negligence of any of
the entities listed above, including their agents, servants, or employees, or any other person. I
take full responsibility for my crew members as above (if applicable) and bind them to this
disclaimer.
