Goals: To introduce students to the world of nouns.
National Standards (IRA): Students use spoken, written, and visual language to
accomplish their own purposes (e.g., for learning, enjoyment, persuasion, and the
exchange of information).
State/Local Standards: 11.) Recognize nouns, verbs, pronouns, conjunctions, and
adjectives in written texts.
Prerequisite Skills/Concepts: TSW will have had some exposure to nouns.
Objectives (action verb – Bloom’s)
Assessment
TTW help students to grasp the meaning of
nouns.
Informal assessment- the teacher will take
anecdotal notes while the students read.
In closing TTW perform a group verbal
quiz.
Procedures (will vary depending upon
discipline, course, and/or content area)
Materials & Resources
Purpose: TTW say “Today we are going to
read a new book called A Mink, a Fink, a
Skating Rink What is a Noun? Then we are
going to discuss what a noun is, distinguish
between the different types of nouns, and
last but not least we will play a game using
nouns!”
Before Reading:
1. TTW have students choral read the
title of the book.
2. TTW say, “From the title, what can
we infer this book is about?
Nouns…right, good job! So what
exactly is a noun? I want you guys
to write down a few questions that
you may have about nouns in the
5 copies of A Mink, a Fink, a Skating Rink

Timer- set for two minutes
left column of your T-chart. After
we finish reading we will go back
and answer our questions.
3. TTW now introduce concrete
objects of words within the text.
TTW pass around a paper made
chandelier, a mink stuffed animal,
and a rolled stack of papers with
ribbon tied around it to represent
the word scholar.

4. TTW say “A noun is a word that is
a person, place, or thing. Raise your
hand if you can give us an example
of a noun.
5. TTW allow two or three students to
respond.
6. TTW say “A proper noun is one
that is capitalized and represents a
specific person, place, or thing.
Raise your hand if you can give us
an example of a proper noun.”
7. TTW allow two or three students to
respond.
8. TTW say “A common noun is one
that refers to a general person,
place, or thing. Raise your hand if
you can give us an example of a
common noun.”
9. TTW allow two or three students to
respond.
10. TTW flash picture cards with
certain proper and common nouns
and have students identify whether
it is a proper or common noun by
having them give a thumbs up or
thumbs down.
11. TTW now introduce the vocabulary

12. TTW say the word and have the
students repeat the word slowly to
annunciate each sound. Then the
teacher will orally give the students
a child friendly definition for the
word.
Definitions:
Mink- Mammals that like water and eat
fish
Hometown- the town or city in which a
person lives or was born, or from which a
person comes.
Fink- a contemptible or thoroughly
13. TTW give each student five flash

During Reading:
17. TTW say, “Alright, I want you to
read to yourself at your own pace.
(Subvocalized reading, not whisper
reading). TTW remind students to
finger read.
18. TS will read subvocalize read at
their own pace.
19. During this time, TTW point to a
student in the group with a green
card for the student to read a little
louder.
20. Once the teacher has heard each
student read, then TTW ask
5 anecdotal check sheets
students to read the text one more
time.
21. TS will reread the story silently
amongst themselves for
comprehension purposes.
22. TTW take anecdotal notes of how
the students are reading.
After Reading
23. TTW give the students three wiki
sticks each. TS will circle three
words they either do not
understand, or that they find
importance in.

24. TTW go around the table and talk
with each student about the three
words they have chosen. This will
be a group conversation so we can
learn from each other.
Writing Activity
25. TTW give students a madlib
activity sheet.

26. TTW say, “Now we are going to
complete our noun activity sheet.
Read each sentence carefully and
fill in the blank with the first noun
that comes to your mind. The noun
can be proper or common. You
have five minutes, when I give you
the signal you may start.”
Timer set for 5 minutes
27. TTW then snap her fingers to give
the signal.
28. When the timer goes off TTW
inform the students to wrap up their
thoughts.
29. TTW say, “Please share one of your
favorite sentences with the group.
30. TTW allow each student to share a
sentence with the group.
Closure
31. TTW allow students to ask
questions from their activity sheet.
32. TTW reinforce the concept of
nouns by displaying a grade 3
random word list on the smart
board.
33. TTW allow one student at a time to
come up to the smart board and
pick out two nouns from the list of
words.
