PLEASE READ THIS SHEET VERY CAREFULLY NOW and PLEASE ALSO BRING A COPY WITH YOU ON THE PLANE. Dear IFP Fellows and IFP Alumni Fellows, First let me wish each of you luck with your visa application and a very safe journey to the US. We are all very excited about your arrival in Arkansas this summer. PLEASE Do not forget the following items in your carry-on bag. It helps to have a checklist. Air ticket DS-2019 (envelope from the Embassy to give to immigration officer) Passport Your admission letter from Spring International AON Health Insurance and travel Insurance Card Your University Identification card Any home Identity or residence cards Personal expense money This paper Pictures of your family and friends Something from home that you love to look at so you can feel at home On your plane, you will be asked to fill out an arrival card. This card is called an I-94. It will ask for your address and phone number in the US, in Arkansas. Please use the following address: Spring International Language Center 300 Hotz Hall University of Arkansas Fayetteville, AR 72701 Telephone Number: (479) 575-7600 I also want to give you a few more pieces of information about your nine-week stay in Arkansas. 1) You will be living in a modest, two-bedroom, one bath apartment with students from other countries. There will be a small kitchen and living room. You may want to bring slippers and a bathrobe. 2) We will be giving you a meal plan for lunch in the cafeteria and a stipend for food shopping so that you can also cook your own breakfast and dinner or share with your international roommates. This will be a special part of your cross-cultural experience and an opportunity to practice your English and get to know your colleagues and the life of a student in the US. You may also want to bring spices that you like to cook with. 3) You will be able to walk to your classes or take the university bus to class or to go grocery shopping. Near your apartment is the University health and physical fitness center (HPER). If you like exercise, you can swim in the indoor pool, take fitness classes, or workout in the gymnasium. It is very convenient and good for your health too. It is also a good way to meet other University students. 4) You will spend one weekend with an American Family and you will have an American Conversation Partner. We suggest that you bring a few small gifts from your country of origin or from where you are studying to teach them about your culture or just as a small thank you. 5) Plan to study hard, have lots of homework, and to make excellent progress with your English. You will have 25 hours a week of classes and lots of other interesting IFP LSJ experiences. 6) The weather in the is variable from very cold to very hot, so bring a warm coat as well as a light sweater and jacket. You can always shop for anything you need here as well. 7) Your following Language program costs will be covered: Air Fare Visa Expenses (PLEASE Bring your receipts. We will reimburse you) Tuition (cost of courses) Room Board (Money for most food) Text Books Student Activities Special IFP workshops and activities 8) You will continue to receive your usual monthly stipend in your country of study. While most of your expenses will be covered in Arkansas, we highly recommend that you bring your IFP stipend money with you for personal expenses and shopping. You may also want to go to the movies or out for dancing on the weekend or for coffee or a drink with a friend. 9) You MUST also bring your AON Health Insurance Card. If you are an IFP Alumni Fellow now, or you will complete your program while you are in Arkansas and become an Alumni Fellow, we will provide you with another health insurance card. 10) We may have an International Dinner while you are here. You may want to bring your national dress to wear and information and/or artifacts to share about your culture. 11) Travel Policy: Fellows’ Round Trip air travel will be arranged by SILC and the Partners. Fellows must travel on the arrival and departure dates on their tickets. No changes may be made except in the case of emergencies or in the case of a program change. No pre or post program personal travel will be permitted. Fellows will only be permitted to travel to other destinations in the US on a specifically designated weekend within their nine-week session that does not conflict with Arkansas-LSJ sponsored activities. If fellows decide to travel on the designated weekend, they will be responsible for their own arrangements and transportation to and from the airport and all other lodging and travel related expenses. In case of the need to contact a fellow in the event of an emergency, fellows must leave a travel itinerary, contact information, and lodging information with SILC. Once again everyone is looking forward to meeting each of you soon. Please let us know if you have any questions. Feel free to email us at ifpsilc@yahoo.com
