Statistics for Environmental Evaluation:
Quantifying the environment.
Monday March 30 to Thursday April 2, 2009
Location: University of Glasgow, Glasgow
This 4-day course provides practically motivated training in key statistical analysis and modelling
skills for environmental scientists. The course is based on earlier successful courses run since 2004
for NERC. The course is organised in collaboration with SAGES and places will be offered in the
following priority:
1. SAGES research students
2. Research students from SAGES Departments working in the SAGES area
3. Research students from SAGES Departments working in non-SAGES geoscience areas
4. Post-docs from SAGES Departments working in the SAGES area who are interested to attend.
Key elements of the course include:
a) hands-on practical sessions using R;
b) discussion/problem solving sessions;
c) case studies and illustrations drawn from topical environmental issues.
The course focuses on core statistical methods, which are fundamental to Environmental Science
and include general sampling designs and their analysis, spatial methods, time series modelling and
trend detection, exploring relationships (regression methods and advanced regression), modelling
extremes. A refresher session on some fundamental statistical tools will be used to provide an
introduction to R (the software used throughout). Each topic is introduced in a general way and
then followed with practical work.
Up to 30 places are available, the registration cost (covering course notes, lunches, coffees and teas)
is £300. The course runs 09.00-17.00 each day; acommodation is not provided but can be arranged
through http://www.cvso.co.uk/accommodation/hotels/. There are numerous local hotels and B&Bs
close to the University and the web address above provides a link to the University’s conference
and vacation office, which offers an accommodation booking service.
Students and Post-docs who wish to attend should consult with their supervisor and complete the
registration form.
