Unit 6 BIOMES AND RESTORATION ECOTOURISM PROJECT You will work with a partner to create a Biome presentation to share with the rest of the class. This presentation will be made for an Ecotourism Conference where visitors (classmates) will participate and learn from your ecotravel agency about your biome. Design this presentation to attract potential customers who attend the conference on Be as creative as you like in your display and presentation. Include posters, tri-fold boards, movies, etc. for your visual display and provide a fact sheet handout of your choice for visitors and an interactive activity (a game, puzzle, etc.). Make sure your display is aesthetically pleasing and informative. Any additional touches that you include will add to the creativity of your display. Your presentation must include the following scientific information. 1. Location of Biome- where on the planet would you find this biome? Why are they located in these specific areas? Provide specific examples of countries that have that biome. 2. Climate within Biome- where the biome is located is directly related to the climate in the biome. Describe the average temperature & precipitation. Does the biome have seasons? What types of seasons are they? You must include a climatogram with your display. 3. Soil within the Biome- this can limit the plant life in the biome. What is special &/or different about the soil in your biome? 4. Plants in the Biome- how are plants adapted to your biome? Provide SPECIFIC examples of at least 3 common plants (producers) found in your biome. 5. Animals in the Biome- how are animals adapted to your biome? Provide SPECIFIC examples of at least 3 common animals in your biome. Describe each animals’ niche and feeding relationship in the biome (herbivore, carnivore, omnivore). 6. Endangered Species- choose at least 2 endangered species found in your biome and explain why they are endangered and how humans are trying to protect them. Laws established for protection? Germ Plasm Banks? Establishing nature preserves? 7. Threats to the Biome- how are humans negatively impacting this biome? Are there invasive species that have been introduced that threaten biodiversity? What problems will result in the long run? What conservation efforts are being taken to protect this biome? 8. Restoration in your Biome- demonstrate how restoration is taking place within your biome. This could be natural restoration in the form of succession either primary or secondary or you could describe methods of restoration being carried out by man. See chapter 10 in your textbook for details. We will go to the media center/have laptops for research and project development on 10/20 and 10/24. Our Ecotravel Conference will be held on 10/26 and 10/27 . Make sure you are very knowledgeable about your subject as potential customers will be asking questions as they move about the conference display area. Please note this is an interesting way to cover chapters 8 and 10. Schedule: research 10/20, lecture on biodiversity 10/21, research 10/24, Planet in Peril 10/25, 10/26 projects due, Biome Quiz 10/28.
