Mark Bussler - Producer/Director
Mark Bussler is a producer and director of high-definition feature documentaries for
DVD, HDTV and television. He is known for his entertaining, historical documentaries
with his “no-talking heads” cinematic style. His high quality visuals and audio work have
earned hundreds of positive reviews nationwide and have set his documentaries apart
from the average fare. Of his film Gettysburg and Stories of Valor, reviewers have said:
“The cinematography is beautiful. The views of the Gettysburg battlefield are simply
breathtaking.”
-Blake A. Magner, The Civil War News
Bussler’s portfolio includes films narrated by Gene Wilder, Keith Carradine, Richard
Dreyfuss and Ronald F. Maxwell. While he began with a budget of less than $1,000 for
his first film, Bussler now manages the production of feature length documentary films
with budgets in excess of $350,000. Two of his most recent documentaries now air on
public television.
Bussler’s newest documentary film entitled Horses of Gettysburg is the fourth
installment in the popular CIVIL WAR MINUTES® series. Narrated by Ronald F.
Maxwell, director of the epic Civil War films Gettysburg and Gods and Generals, Horses
of Gettysburg focuses on the estimated 72,000 horses and mules that served in the battle
of Gettysburg and throughout the Civil War.
In 2005 Bussler released EXPO – Magic of the White City, narrated by Gene Wilder,
which brings to life the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893 through a cinematic visit to the
World’s Columbian Exposition. EXPO – Magic of the White City was Inecom’s
bestselling title for 2005 and a top seller on Amazon.com and at Borders stores
nationwide. Recent reviews state:
“A dazzling trip back to another time.”
-Bill Diehl, ABC Radio Network
“One of the year’s finest DVD premiere documentaries, this one is a must-watch.”
-Jamie Clark, Video Business
A veteran of several Civil War documentaries, in 2004 Bussler released Gettysburg and
Stories of Valor narrated by Keith Carradine, the third installment in the CIVIL WAR
MINUTES® series. The documentary film produced for HDTV broadcast and DVD
contains 30 unique stories that capture the scenic beauty of the Gettysburg battlefield
while telling the personal stories of the men who fought there. The DVD became Inecom
Entertainment Company’s bestselling documentary in 2004 and earned rave reviews
nationally.
“Having recently seen a documentary filled with ‘talking heads,’ I applaud director Mark
Bussler for avoiding this technique and concentrating on cinematic elements in
Gettysburg and Stories of Valor. The film is an excellent example of how history can
entertain and educate at the same time.”
-Betty Jo Tucker, ReelTalkReviews.com
In 2003, Bussler wrote and directed Johnstown Flood, narrated by Richard Dreyfuss,
which recreates the tragedy that claimed an estimated 2,200 lives and wipes out 99 entire
families. The flood devastates the 14-mile valley between Conemaugh Lake and
Johnstown, Pennsylvania, transforming the bustling industrial city into a wasteland. The
film began airing on public television in November 2003.
“Johnstown Flood is a riveting and stylish film.”
-Kevin Laforest, Montreal Film Journal
“Beautifully narrated by Richard Dreyfuss. Really brings the story alive with first-hand
accounts from survivors.”
-Sophia Choi, CNN Headline News
Bussler is a 1998 graduate of Bucknell University with a degree in Business Marketing.
Bussler was a 2003 PITTSBURGH magazine and the Pittsburgh Urban Magnet Project
(PUMP) “40 Under 40” honoree. This award recognizes 40 talented individuals under the
age of 40 who are making a positive impact on their region’s development.
His next production is set to be World War I Minutes, written by EXPO – Magic of the
White City writer, Brian Connelly.
