Scope and Contents
The Billings Family Papers collection consists of written and typed documents, primarily relating
to financial matters, including money lent and property leased. The collection includes legal
documents, such as deeds, and handwritten documents, such as accounting notes and
correspondence. Because the papers date from the 18th century to the 20th century, the figures
represented in these files are represented both in British Pounds Sterling and U.S. Dollars.
Some notable items in the collection include personal correspondence between Charles Morris
Billings and Charlotte White Billings, a receipt for money loaned signed by Sophia Smith, and a
receipt for oil dated July 5, 1776.
Organization
The files in this collection have been divided into eight series: Accounting Notes;
Correspondence; Deeds; Invoices; Promissory Notes; Receipts; Miscellaneous; and Fragments.
The files within each series are further divided between documents belonging to members of the
Billings family and those belonging to members of other families.
Series 1: Accounting Notes (1744-1850, n.d.) contains notes detailing expenses and incomes,
as well as values of estates. The Billings files are arranged alphabetically according to name,
and chronologically within each folder. The non-Billings family files are arranged alphabetically
according to name. The miscellaneous documents are arranged chronologically.
Series 2: Correspondence (1754-1853, n.d.) contains letters to and from members of the
Billings family, friends, and business associates. This series also includes personal
correspondence between Charles Morris Billings and Charlotte White Billings, his wife, while
she travelled to Ohio in 1838. The Billings files are arranged alphabetically according to name,
and chronologically within each folder. The non-Billings family files are arranged alphabetically
according to name.
Series 3: Deeds (1715-1919, n.d.) contains deeds and legal documents assigning ownership to
property and establishing financial obligations. The Billings files are arranged alphabetically
according to name, and chronologically within each folder. The non-Billings family files are
arranged alphabetically according to name.
Series 4: Invoices (1753-1844, n.d.) contains written documentation for goods and services
rendered and amount due. The Billings files are arranged alphabetically according to name,
and chronologically within each folder. The non-Billings family files are arranged alphabetically
according to name.
Series 5: Promissory Notes (1731-1873, n.d.) contains written documents pledging repayment
on loans given. The Billings files are arranged alphabetically according to name, and

chronologically within each folder. The non-Billings family and miscellaneous files are arranged
alphabetically according to name.
Series 6: Receipts (1750-1861, n.d.) contains receipts for goods delivered and services
rendered. The Billings files are arranged alphabetically according to name, and chronologically
within each folder. The non-Billings family files are arranged alphabetically according to name.
Series 7: Miscellaneous (1720-1854, n.d.) contains documents pertaining to information on
land and genealogy, Last Wills and Testaments, records from Hatfield town meetings,
invitations, certificates, and other miscellanea. Files consisting of multiple documents –
genealogical information, land and lot information, wills, and town records – are placed in their
own folders. Files consisting of only one document are placed in a miscellaneous folder. All
documents in this series are arranged chronologically.
Series 8: Fragments (1739-1809, n.d.) contains fragments of documents. If possible, the
fragments have been identified with a member of the Billings family and placed into their own
folder. Fragments that are not associated with members of the Billings family or are unknown
are in their own folder. The files are arranged chronologically within each folder.
