Classes
General English Language classes begin each morning at 9 a.m. and run until 1 p.m. Classes focus on the
four skills including reading, writing, listening and speaking with a generally communicative approach to
improve students’ standards of English. The summer school curriculum is based on the 'topic based
syllabus' which now incorporates Irish cultural content and supplementary material, functional English
and authentic materials for all levels for every week. At the end of each week students prepare and give
a presentation.
The First Certificate in English (Cambridge English: First) & Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE)
preparation courses start on July 27th 2015. These courses focus on exam preparation for both exams
which will be held on the week of the 20th and 21st of August 2015. Please read full details on the
separate sheet.
The IELTS Preparation course begins on July 20th and finishes on August 14th.
Proficiency
The proficiency level course (CEFR C2) will include general English as well as preparation for the CPE
exam (Cambridge English: Proficiency). However, there is not an August CPE exam in Ireland or the UK
so the next paper-based exams would be in December 2015. This course will run from 13th July to 21st of
August (6 weeks). Students may take it for a minimum of 2 weeks.
Guest Lectures
Guest Lectures are presented by experts on Irish topics of cultural and general interest. Topics included
in the Guest Lecture Series previously were Irish literature, the Famine, Irish music and sport. Students
also get the opportunity to watch Irish dancing and learn some of this world famous traditional dance!
Afternoon Options for 2015
Afternoon Options run for 2 hours, from 2.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m., on Monday (excluding August 3rd (Bank
Holiday weekend)), Tuesday and Thursday afternoons (6 hours per week). Please see details below.
Business English
This course includes understanding business letters, writing job applications, making business telephone
calls, describing a company's financial performance, describing company structure and organisation,
analysing advertising and marketing strategies, understanding Human Resources vocabulary and
discussing human resources issues. This option covers the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and
writing and the average level of the vocabulary is intermediate to advanced. Homework will be assigned.
Students will also be introduced to the BEC examinations (Business English Certificate) which can be
taken worldwide.
