Facilities, Equipment, and Other Resources

This document lists the characterization instrumentation that is available on the UM campus.

The EMAL Facilities - Centralized Facility

The University of Michigan EMAL is divided into two physically distinct laboratories, which are unified administratively (see main narrative).

Central Campus Branch - C.C. Little Building

The Central Campus Branch is located in the Department of Geological Sciences’ C.C. Little Building and comprises of approximately 3000 square feet of custom-designed space. It provides services to the entire

University. Primary users include the College of Pharmacy, the School of Dentistry, the Museum of

Zoology and Paleontology, the Departments of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Geological Sciences and

Materials Sciences & Engineering. The principal equipment includes:

1. a Cameca CAMEBAX electron microprobe analyzer (EMPA) with four spectrometers and a Kevex

XEDS system;

2. a Cameca SX 100 EMPA with six spectrometers and a Rontec Xflash 2000 XEDS system;

3. a Hitachi S3200-N SEM with an EDAX XEDS system;

4. a Philips CM12 STEM with a Kevex Quantum XEDS system;

5. an Enraf Nonius CAD4 Single Crystal X-Ray Diffractometer;

6. a Scintag X1 Powder X-Ray Diffractometer;

7. Rigaku Ultima IV Multipurpose XRD.

The North Campus Branch - Space Research Building

The North Campus Branch of EMAL is located in the College of Engineering on the North Campus of the

University and provides services to the entire University. It is located in a custom-designed basement wing that provides approximately 4500 square feet of low-vibration, low-field, environment controlled laboratory space. Its primary users are MSE, NERS, ChemE, EECS, Mechanical Engineering,

Environmental and Civil Engineering, Chemistry and Physics. The principal equipment includes:

1. a Cameca LEAP-4000HR atom-probe tomography microscope with voltage pulsing and fs laser pulsing capability (200kHz) for analysis of metallic, semiconducting and insulating materials;

2. a temporary installation of a JEOL 2100F Cs corrected STEM with a EDAX XEDS system and

Gatan Imaging Filter. This will be replaced by the JEOL 3100R05 cold field emission gun double

Cs corrected transmission electron microscope soon to be delivered;

3. a JEOL 2010F FasTEM AEM with an EDAX/Gatan XEDS, Gatan TV cameras and Imaging Filter;

4. a JEOL 3010 HRTEM with an AMT camera system and EDAX XEDS system;

5. a Philips/FEI XL30 FEGSEM with EDAX XEDS system;

6. an FEI Nova 200 Nanolab Dualbeam FIB with EDAX XEDS system;

7. a Kratos Axis Ultra XPS system;

8. an FEI Quanta 3D Dualbeam FIB and environmental SEM (ESEM);

9. an FEI XL30 ESEM with EDAX XEDS system;

10. Bruker Dimension Icon scanning probe microscope (SPM);

The North Campus XRD systems are located in the H.H. Dow Building and comprise:

1. a Bruker NanoStar Small-Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) System;

2. a Bede D1 High Resolution X-Ray Diffractometer;

3. a Bruker D8 Discover X-ray Diffractometer with a General Area Detector Diffraction System;

4. a Rigaku Rotating Anode X-Ray Diffractometer.

Both facilities also have equipment for specimen preparation, saws, polishing tables, microtomes and ion mills.

The Microscopy and Image Analysis Laboratory - Biomedical Research Building, Medical Campus

The MIL is a centralized facility of more than 3,000 square feet housing major equipment, used on a

shared basis by investigators focusing mainly on studies of cell and tissue morphology and ultrastructure.

It is a fee-for-service-based operation open to researchers from all departments within the University, other institutions, and also the industrial research community.

Instrumentation is principally light based and includes:

1. 8 Highgrade opitical microscope systems, for details see: http://www.med.umich.edu/cdb/mil/instruments/microscopes.html;

2. an AMRAY 1910 Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope;

3. a Philips CM-100 transmission electron microscope (TEM) with an AMT 2K by 2K CCD TV system;

4. a Zeiss LSM 510-META Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope;

5. an Olympus FluoView 500 Laser Scanning Confocal Microscope.

The facility also maintains specimen preparation equipment, for example: A Polaron E5100 Sputter

Coater; Denton high vacuum evaporator and 3 Reichert Ultracut-E ultramicrotomes.

The Van Vlack Undergraduate Laboratory - Materials Science and Engineering, North Campus

This laboratory, principally reserved for undergraduate use, contains a tungsten gun FEI XL30 scanning electron microscope with an EDAX X-ray energy dispersive spectrometry system. It is available for research use 8am to 5pm, when not in use for undergraduate laboratories and projects.

Irradiated Material Testing Laboratory - Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences

The Irradiated Material Testing Laboratory (IMTL) was established to provide a facility to conduct experimental research on neutron irradiated materials in aqueous environment. The characterization equipment comprises:

1. a tungsten gun JEOL JSM-6480 scanning electron microscope (SEM) and EDAX XEDS system.

This instrument can be installed in the IMTL hot cell for the analysis of radioactive materials. It is not typically available for routine SEM analysis.

Lurie NanoFabrication Facility

The LNF is available, on a fee basis, for use by research groups from government, industry and universities. Equipment and processes are available for research on silicon integrated circuits, MEMS, III-

V compound devices, organic devices and nanoimprint technology. The facility is a clean-room and requires gowns and masks. The characterization equipment comprises:

1. a Hitachi S8000 cold field emission gun SEM.

2. a JEOL 840 tungsten gun SEM.
