RUNGSTEDLUND VISIT
Since the 1985 release of Out of Africa, starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep,
thousands of literary and movie fans have been visiting the former home of Baroness
Karen Blixen, who wrote under the pen name Isak Dinesen. Her home, Rungstedlund,
located at Rungsted Strandvej III (tel. 45-57-10-57), is midway between Copenhagen and
Helsingør on the coastal road.
Her father, Wilhelm Dinesen, purchased the estate in 1879. Blixen left in 1914 for Kenya
when she married Bror van Blixen Finecke, but returned in 1931 and stayed until her death
in 1962.
It was at Rungstedlund that Blixen wrote her first major success, Seven Gothic Tales,
which many literary critics consider more memorable than Out of Africa. She also wrote
collections of stories, Winter's Tales and Last Tales, here. Before Blixen's father acquired
the property, it was known as Rungsted Kro (inn), attracting travelers going north from
Copenhagen to Helsingør.
Blixen wrote in Ewald's Room, named to honor poet Johannes Ewald, who stayed at the
place when it was an inn. Four years before her death, Blixen established the
Rungstedlund Foundation, which owns the property and its 16-hectare (40-acre) garden
and bird sanctuary. The gardens have long been open to the public, but in 1991 the
foundation invited Queen Margrethe to open the museum.
In one part of the museum is a small gallery with exhibits in oil, pastel, and charcoal -- all
works by Blixen. The museum is filled with photographs, manuscripts, and memorabilia
that document Blixen's life in both Africa and Denmark. Blixen is buried in the grave at the
foot of Edwaldshøj.

LOUISIANA MUSEUM OF MODERN ART VISIT
Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is situated in Denmark on the North Zealand coast in a
spacious, old park with a fine view across the sound of Sweden. It houses an exquisite
collection of modern art by international artists such as Arp, Francis Bacon, Calder,
Dubuffet, Max Ernst, Sam Francis, Giacometti, Kiefer, Henry Moore, Picasso,
Rauschenberg and Warhol.
Every year, the Louisiana Museum shows six to eight major exhibitions of modern and
contemporary art, including classical masters of modern art as well as new and upcoming
international artists. For these both solo and group exhibitions the museum publishes
catalogues in the Louisiana Revy series as well as special catalogues.
Louisiana is not merely an experience in modern and contemporary art, but a congenial
reflection of the interplay between art, architecture and landscape.
The park serves as an ideal setting for displaying the museum’s collection of modern
sculptures.
Similarly the prominent museum buildings, constructed between 1958 and 1998, offer a
fascinating background for the permanent collection of twentieth century art.
The relaxing atmosphere, the museum’s permanent collection, changing exhibitions of art,
films, concerts, the children’s wing, the café service indoors and outdoors, the museum
shop with its large selection of books, art reproductions, graphics, posters, postcards,
design and classical CDs - all combine in making Louisiana a pleasure to visit.
