Types of Clouds

Cirrus Clouds

Cirrus clouds are high, wispy, feathery clouds.

They are made of ice crystals. They are seen during fair weather and can mean that a change in the weather is on the way.

Cumulo-nimbus Clouds

When cumulus clouds get larger and darker on the bottom, they become cumulo-nimbus clouds. They rise high in the atmosphere and look flat on top.

These clouds can produce thunder, lightning, heavy rain, hail, strong winds, and sometimes tornadoes.

Stratus Clouds

These clouds stretch across the sky like a blanket.

They are smooth, gray clouds that cover the whole sky and block out direct sunlight. Light rain and drizzle are usually associated with stratus clouds.

Cumulus Clouds

Cumulus clouds are mostly white, puffy clouds with flat bottoms. They look like fluffy cotton balls and are considered fair weather clouds.
