VIDEO 1
1- What do you know ?
Brainstorming : view from Space
It is the most feared storm on Earth
How adj: How fast? How high? How warm? How strong? How wide
Nouns: speed; height; altitude; temperature; strength; width
Different names in different regions: typhoons; cyclones

LISTENING FOR INFORMATION
2- Expressing a condition
A hurricane may form in the Atlantic providing the conditions are right.
A tropical storm only becomes a hurricane if its winds go over 74 mph.
A storm will not become a hurricane unless sea temperature reaches 27°C.
3- Parallel increase
The warmer the Ocean is, the more likely it is there will be a hurricane.
The more the storm builds, the faster the warm air rushes upwards.
The larger the storm is, the more it feels the tug of the Earth’s rotation. (coriolis force)
The larger it grows, the more it sucks up warmth and moisture from the sea.
The tighter the vortex in the middle becomes, the faster the hurricane rotates
spins
whirls
spirals
VIDEO 3
When a hurricane hits land, it causes devastation, lots of damage
the coast
It triggers off storm surge.
There is heavy rain, torrential rain which results in flooding.
Hurricanes may produce violent tornadoes.
They always generate extremely strong winds.(gusts up to 370 km/h)
There are sometimes giant hailstorms.
People are often forced to evacuate.
CLASSIFICATION ( SAFFIR SIMPSON )
If winds reach 74mph, it becomes a category 1 hurricane.
are stronger than
are superior to
exceed
go beyond, over
Other possibility:
As long as winds stay under 95 mph, it remains a category 1 hurricane.
Réinvestir parallel increase
The stronger the winds, the more damage there is, the more dangerous it is.
DAMAGE
Passive, naturally: we are talking about trees, mobile homes etc so they are chosen as the
subject of our sentences.
If it is a category 5 hurricane
Trees are uprooted
Cars can be flipped
Some areas are flooded
People are left homeless
Barrier islands are flattened, levelled
Wooden structures are blown down
Lower floors in houses are bulldozered, gutted, devastated
Residential areas may have to be evacuated

FORECASTING/ TRACKING/ EVACUATING
Hurricanes have a very unpredictable, erratic path
track
Nowadays, thanks to satellites, forecasting has improved.
Before, people used to have less than a day to prepare

ROLE PLAY / EVALUATION : EN LIGNE
Assignement
Handle a hurricane
You are the Mayor of Pensacola Beach, Florida.
A hurricane is heading your way.
Will you evacuate the town? It’s up to you.

Writing skills and Decision making skills will be assessed.
CONCLUSION
Other severe weather or natural hazards: Tidal waves, earthquakes, avalanches, flash flooding,
blizzards, etc…
Global warming seems to have increased the number of hurricanes.
