Impact of Bariatric Surgery on Total Joint Arthroplasty (Multi-Center Trial)
0.6 months/year
The goals of this multicenter trial is to test the hypothesis that bariatric surgery prior to total joint
arthroplasty will improve outcomes in patients with extreme obesity. We will compare long-term
weight, physical function, mobility, indices of joint function, and quality of life in patients who receive
bariatric surgery ~ 1 year before total joint arthroplasty vs. control subjects who receive total joint
arthroplasty in the absence of pre-arthroplasty bariatric surgery.

THE COLLATERAL IMPACT OF BARIATRIC SURGERY ON FAMILIES
This observational study will prospectively assess changes in bariatric surgery patients' cohabitating
partners/spouses(N=40 dyads) pre and postoperatively (6 and 12 months) in: 1) weight (kg) and BMI; 2)
dietary habits and eating behaviors;3) physical activity; 4) home food environments; 5) social support; 6)
blood pressure and 7) serum lipoprotein levels. Changes in the weight and growth trajectories of patients'

FEASIBILITY AND RELATIVE VALIDITY OF INTERNET-BASED DIETARY ASSESSMENT
TOOLS AND THEIR RELATIONSHIP TO BODY COMPOSITION AND PHYSICAL FUNCTION IN
RURAL PENNSYLVANIANS
We propose a research project that compares a standard telephone 24-hour recall methodology
collected using the Nutrition Data System for Research (NDSR) to an online Automated SelfAdministered 24-hour recall (ASA24). We also plan to administer an online version of our Diet Quality
Screening Questionnaire (DQSQ). The proposed study will also provide assessment of the DQSQ
based upon analysis of data collected using ASA24. We also plan to examine the relationships
between our dietary assessment findings, and body composition and physical function. In addition,
we intend to use this research as supporting preliminary data for a future effort to secure extramural
funding to establish and follow a new (younger) GRAS-based cohort for dietary studies.

QUANTITATIVE METABOLOMICS, TYPE 2 DIABETES, AND BARIATRIC SURGERY
This pilot study will lead to a better characterization of serum metabolome of preoperative bariatric
surgery patients with and without type 2 diabetes (T2D). Moreover, it will provide novel insight in to
whether bariatric surgery can normalize the serum metabolome of T2D patients. Our long-term goal
is to utilize quantitative metabolomics to enhance the ability to predict T2D remission in response to
bariatric surgery and to predict those at risk for relapse of their T2D.
