Assistant Manager – Laboratories
City Utilities of Springfield, Missouri, is seeking qualified candidates for an Assistant Manager – Laboratories
within Water Distribution and Supply. City Utilities is a progressive, community-owned utility serving southwest

The Assistant Manager – Laboratories is responsible for the direction and results of the laboratory analysts
and support staff, having primary responsibility for chemical analyses, microbiological analyses and algal
identification as well as source water and watershed monitoring as it relates to water quality. This position
serves as technical advisor in all areas such as regulations, public health, water quality, analytical
instrumentation, data interpretation, land management practices and reservoir management and responsible
for EPA/DNR laboratory certification and the reliability of all results using robust QA/QC, adequate training and
staffing. The Assistant Manager interprets research results to direct and guide lakes and watershed
management practices.
The Assistant Manager – Laboratories requires an ACS certified college degree in Chemistry or other appropriate
technically related degree. Graduate level work or special training courses from AWWA, EPA, or DNR are highly
desirable and special applicable experience will be considered. Master’s degree preferred if in an appropriate
area of study.
Five years’ advanced laboratory experience is required with management responsibility. The experience should
be in a utility or water laboratory. Must have adequate knowledge of drinking water regulations as well as
environmental regulations. Must be thoroughly acquainted with QA/QC procedures and Good Laboratory
Practices. Must have demonstrated ability to manage professional staff and interface with customers and the
public as well as the professional groups. Must have a working knowledge of sound supervisory and
management practices. Must be experienced in written and oral presentations. Must have a Class A Operator’s
License or be able to obtain one within 18 months. Must have a valid Missouri driver’s license (minimum Class
F). Must be able to perform field surveillance, swim, operate a boat, and lift gear and instruments in a safe
manner. Normal field, laboratory and office environment. Must be available on a 24-hour basis for emergency
situations and will assign other laboratory personnel to be available.
