NOTES___________________________________________________________________________ This is the patriarch of the Parkison line. Various spellings will confuse the issue, but "Parkison" is the most correct. His birth place county is in question. Most records show Harrison County, Pennsylvania in 1811. However, this cannot be. According to the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania in a May 1990 letter to my cousin Gracie Stering: "The areas of present day Washington, Westmorland, Greene and Fayette counties were originally in dispute between the provinces of Pennsylvania and Virginia. Virginia considered them part of the District of Augusta. This district later became the counties of Yohogania, Monongalia, and Ohio. Harrison county was later taken from Monongalia county. The situation was cleared up after 1784, and the current state boundaries were established as they now stand. There is (now) no Harrison County in Pennsylvania. It was confusing and could be confused in 1800, too. But there has never been a Harrison cunty in Pennsylvania. There was once a Harrison County, Virginia, which was located in in that part of Virginia now recognized as Pennsylvania." ______________________________________________________ Page 5 SUBMITTED BY: Brent K. FAMILY GROUP SHEET – John Harrison Parkison NOTES_(Continued)_______________________________________________________________ There's a family story that the Parkison line was actually Brown. I quote from a monograph by my cousin Mary (Miller) Kropf of May 1979: "Much of this information is taken from a series of letters written by George Don Alkire of Fresno, CA to Minnie Parkison Miller during 1967, 1968. George was interested in tracing a common ancestor, the great grandparents of both George and Minnie, John H. Alkire and Sarah Skiles. John H. Alkire, Jr and his wife, Mary Jane Overpeck lived on the next farm beside Minnie's uncle, Thomas J. Parkison and Sarah Cameron between 1870 and 1881, In Guthrie County, Jackson Twp, IA. He stated that Myrtle Parkison and her daughter Almira lived on the old homestead near Keystone, SD. "John H. Alkire (born 1779, died in 1875) married Sarah Skiles (born 1797) in Pleasant Twp, Madison Cty, OH in 1819. They raised four children: Lydia Ann, who carried on our line; W.H.H.; Thomas; and John H. Junior. John H. Alkire was born in KY and came up from there when quite young, with his father. Sarah Skiles was born in Madison Cty, OH around the Mt. Sterling area. "Lydia Ann Alkire (1820-1900) married John Harrison Parkison, who fought in the Civil War....To them were born five children: John Harrison II [III], William Henry Harrison (who carried on our line), Sarah Jane, Joseph [who married into my Wilcox line], and Thomas J. [Subsequent research shows a total of ten children with these added: Margaret, Elizabeth, Cynthia Ann, George Milton and Amariah.] "Following is from one of the letters written to Minnie from George Alkire, dtd 1 Dec 1967: 'Say Minnie, I got a question for you. Tom Linton told me over a year ago when I was visiting him and his wife that really the Parkison name should be Brown. Can you explain that? Tom Linton says that when John Harrison Parkison, your grandfather, was a baby and his parents' name were Brown, that Mr Brown died and Mrs Brown got sick and had to be cared for (both she and the baby) by the neighbors who were Parkisons. Soon that mother, Mrs Brown, died; so the Parkisons just raised the baby and even gave him their name Parkison. Now, I never asked anyone about it, but tonight a letter came from Johnnie Parkison of Yuba City, CA (actually his daughter, Gracie, wrote for her dad Johnny) and the letter says that Johnnie Parkison says that the Parkison name might well have been Brown, for his Grandfather, John Harrison Parkison, was an adopted boy. His letter also says that Sarah Parkison's daughter Jane and one time was working on the details of that. That would be a nice thing for the Parkison family to have figured out. I'd like to know how it is too. What knowledge do you have on the subject? I'd appreciate knowing. It also strikes me that George Abner Parkison mentioned that his grandfather's name was changed from Brown to Parkison. As I recall, he mentioned that when I visited him and his wife last year at Stuart, IA.' ______________________________________________________ Page 6 SUBMITTED BY: Brent K. Wilcox, 727 E. FAMILY GROUP SHEET – John Harrison Parkison HUSBAND: John Harrison Parkison WIFE: Lydia Ann Alkire NOTES_(Continued)_______________________________________________________________ "In another letter, 5 Jan 1968, George stated: 'Your grandmother, Lydia Ann Alkire Parkison, caught diptheria and so did all members in her home at that time. She went on for 80 years; and those children of hers went on for an average of 93 years. Wow!!' " [Thanks to Mary Kropf of Normal, OK.] My Aunt, Ethel Wilcox Linton, writes "Grandpa Joe Parkison told me, in a no-nonsense tone, there were two boys on that ship, and the Brown boy's folks did die [she underscored the "did die"] and [was] took in by Parkisons. That's all I know about it -- just his opinion." This puts a different twist to the story! Was there a shipwreck involved? Again according to the Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania in May 1990: "Adoptions were very rare in the early nineteenth century. And, guardianships were usually involved with probate proceedings. Any records of adoptions or guardianships would be in the county court housed..." Gracie Stering is in the searching process right now. JHP Was described by Rev John M. Mullen in 1892 as "one of the pioneers of the great State of Ohio." He moved on to Licking Cty, OH where he "happily converted to God" and then moved from there to Madison Cty, OH where he married Lydia Ann Alkire 11 March 1839. Mullen says ten children were born to them "including thirty four grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren [in 1892]." In 1851, JHP moved to Parker Cty, IN. In 1868, he moved the family to Guthrie Cty, IA, and joined the Missionary Baptist Church in 1874. He joined the Church of God in 1887 after the baptist church was disorganized. JHP was a Civil War veteran. He first enslisted with the 71st Indiana Infantry in 1862, but was refused on account of his age. He then enlisted at Clinton, Indiana 12 November 1863 in Company C, 123rd Regiment, Indiana Infantry Volunteers, as a private. Fudged about his age. He was honorably discharged at Lexington, North Carolina on 25 August 1865. At times during his service, he was disabled with inflammatory rheumatism which caused some disability in his later years. He eventually received a pension. According to service records he stood 5 feet 8 1/2 inches, and was light complected with blue eyes and light hair. The 1 Jan 1891 Guthrie County "Vedette" indicates John H. Parkison died while in Indiana on business. Son Joseph (my Wilcox' paternal line) went to get his body and while gone, Joseph's daughter Lydia died of diptheria. John's obiturary appeared in the Vedette on 16 Oct 1892. He's buried next to Lydia in the tiny cemetery at Monteith, IA, a small community not far from Guthrie Center, IA. Their stones were in good shape and quite legible when I visited there in May, 1989. Monteith, IA was a thriving community from the 1880's to about 1950. It is not now an incorporated town, but some of what was the main street is still there. My great grandfather O.P.
