MIT Graduate Student Oral Defense Procedure

1
This guideline is in accordance with University Law, University Law Enforcement Rules, Degree Conferral Law, and
Degree Conferral Enforcement Rules.
Article
2
Requirements below must be satisfied before applying for oral defense:
i. Completed minimum credit hours for graduation.
ii. Finished final draft of thesis.
Article

Procedure for oral defense application:
i. Executed before the semester deadline for oral defense application.
ii. Submission of academic transcript, final draft of thesis, and thesis abstract.

Application must be submitted within the timeframe given.

Once the application for oral defense has been approved by the institution, the student must submit five copies of the final
draft and thesis abstract for evalu ation by the institution.

Procedure for oral defense:
i. Organize oral defense board members.
ii. Conduct oral defense examination.
Article

Organization of Oral Defense Board Members:
i. Oral defense board members consist of 3 to 5 membe rs, which include the thesis advisor.
1/3rd of the board members must be non -MIT
faculty.
ii. One of the board members is to be assigned the convener, which cannot be the thesis advisor.
iii. Part-time teachers employed by MIT qualify as non -MIT faculty.
iv. The oral defense board members' names must be submitted by the institution to the MIT President for approval.

Oral defense board members, other than the technical advisor , must meet one of the following requirements:
i. Professor or Associate Professor.
ii. Research member of Academia Sinica
iii. Have doctoral degree and demonstrated achievement in research.
iv. Rare specialization must have demonstrated achievement in research or profession.
Requirements iii and iv must be evaluated a nd approved in institutional board meeting.

The date and location of the oral defense is scheduled by the institute and shall be conducted prior to the end of the
semester.
Article 10
Oral defense proceedings must comply with the followin g stipulations:
i. A minimum of three oral defense board members must be at the proceeding and cannot be entrusted to other people to substit ute. If oral
defense proceeds with less than three board members, then the grade will not be recognized.
ii. The grade of the oral defense is determined by the equal weighted average of the board members who were present at the proceeding.
iii. The thesis (including abstract), other than foreign language studies, can be written in English or Chinese.

the student automatically receives an “F”.
v. The passing grade for oral defense is 70% while the maximum grade is 100%.

vi. The oral defense consists of questions derived from the thesis.

If necessary, a written exam may be requested by the boa rd members.
If the student fails to pass the oral defense, and the student has not exceeded the maximum duration of study, then the
student can retake the oral defense in the following semester or the following school year.

A grade should be submitted to the Office of Academic Affairs within two weeks of successful completion of oral defense.

If a degree has been conferred, but acts of plagiarism are or fraudulent behavior related to thesis, report, or technical report,
are later discovered, then, after verification of such ac ts, then an abatement, and a retrieval of the degree, will be executed.
Article 15
These regulations and guidelines have been reviewed, revised and approved by the president and the faculty, in a
Conference of Academic Affairs and a Conference of Schoo l Affairs.
