O5.2 Understand and express simple opinions Learning Objective To play a game to revise vocabulary. To be able to introduce themselves and explain their subject likes/dislikes. Introduction/ Warm up Play the memory game. Pupils have 30 seconds to memorise a selection of pictures on OHP/whiteboard/ Flashcards Remove one of the pictures and rearrange while the pupils’ eyes are closed. Pupils try to remember which picture is missing. Activities Revise vocabulary to describe yourself and your preferences. Je m’appelle Emily. J’ai 10 ans. J’aime la natation. Ma matière préférée, c’est les maths. Set up a tv-style quiz show Divide class into small groups with colour names. Each team presents themselves to the audience. Je m’appelle etc…. Plenary/ consolidation Announce points totals and find les gagnants (the winners) KAL New Language les gagnants (m pl) (the winners) Nominate a captain for each team. S/he is the person who runs to you with pictures in the games. Game 1 – “what’s this?” teams compete to name flashcards. (Provide ‘buzzers’) Game 2 – “cherchez” (find) Real props in a box, call out words for groups to find and run to quiz master. Game 3 – find the picture Flashcards placed around room Game 4 - play name the classroom object. Say the letters of a word, children write down word then buzz when they can name the object. Avoid providing translations in English during first reading. Allow children to see pictures and enjoy hearing language at text level. Use tone of voice to emphasise darkness of text contrasting with last page. Encourage children to chorus repeated phrase: ‘sombre, très sombre…’ Hold up different shades of blue. Ask whether they are bleu sombre or bleu clair? (light blue) (add e to clair for feminine words) Which words/phrases do they recognise? Dans, souris, salle. Discuss Il y a/Il y avait. Talk about the meaning of sombre (English same spelling) Can be dark (as in dark blue) or gloomy/dismal What do they think the story is about? Do they know any similar English stories? Introduction/ Warm up Play game using preposition mimes. (see week 3) Activities Play ‘Pass the sentence’ parcel. Pass round a bag containing word cards from a sentence in the text while music plays. When music stops child takes out one card and reads it aloud. Place words in middle. Children discuss with their partner what the sentence is. Explain that you are going to create a class version of the story with a new title Une Histoire Claire . You will keep the first sentence the same, except for the word sombre. How will the story change if we use the adjective clair? What might we find at the end of the story? (something dark and scary to contrast with the rest of the book) Distribute numbered sentences from the story to pairs/groups. They use dictionaries to help them change the sentences which they write on large pieces of paper. Introduction/ Warm up Dictionary Bingo Children use dictionaries in pairs to choose a four letter French word which they write on their whiteboards. You call out letters of the alphabet, children cross out letters in their word that you say. Winner is first pair to have all letters called out. Plenary/ consolidation Activities Have a list of prepositions, nouns, adjectives and phrases listed on the board. Throw soft ball around room, each catcher has to add a word/phrase to a story eg. Dans – la cantine– il y avait – un singe – bleu. – Devant – le singe – il y avait – une souris – verte. (Support children by seating in mixed ability pairs – ball passes to pair who discuss which word/phrase they will choose) Display the sentences created in the previous week. Check for any additional word changes in order to make the new story make sense. Sort the class into 2 groups. One group will be working on Une Histoire Sombre, the other group will work on Une Histoire Claire. Distribute numbered sentences from each story to pairs who have to create a mime based on that sentence. (Make sure you also have a copy of the new story on the board), When pairs have created their mime they should practise reading the new and old version of the story. KAL Choose two confident children to alternately read a line from Une Histoire Sombre and Une Histoire Claire. Pairs act out their mime for each sentence. Ensure tone of voice matches the text.
