"Insider Tips on Launching Your
Information Science Career"

Date/Time/Location: Saturday June 9th, 2012, 10am – 3pm, LIU Post Campus (exact location
on campus tbd)
Description: This is a two-session (morning and afternoon) event of career and job-hunting
information, advice and inspiration, for library school students, librarians and other information
professionals.
The morning session will be a discussion with panelists from different types of libraries about
what it is like to work in those libraries, and in the afternoon another set of panelists will give
practical advice and info re: job hunting, professional development, civil service info for public
library jobs on Long Island, social media, membership/activities in professional organizations,
and more.

Morning session: 10:00 am – 12:00 noon: Working in Various Kinds of Libraries:
Dr. Bea Baaden (topic: working in a school media center) Director, School Library Media
Program and Adjunct Professor of School Library Media, LIU’s Palmer School of Library and
Information Science.
Michael Santangelo (topic: working in a public library) Electronic Resources Analyst in the
Office of Materials Selection at the Brooklyn Public Library.
Mary Robison (topic: working in an academic library) - Reference Librarian at the General
Theological Seminary’s Christoph Keller, Jr. Library.
Julie Zilavy (topic: working in a special library) Manager of Online Services at the 4A’s
(American Association of Advertising Agencies).
Gerry Kopczynski (topic: Palmer School certificates for those who already have an MLS)

Marc Horowitz (topic: public libraries on Long Island - civil service tests, lists, hiring) Director
of the North Babylon Public Library.
Tom Nielsen (topic: METRO) Member Services Manager at the Metropolitan New York Library
Council (METRO).
Tom Witt (topic: building a reputation, social media, volunteering, professional activities,
teaching, writing, and more): Director of the North Merrick Public Library and an Adjunct
Professor of Library and Information Science at the Palmer School.
Diane Goldstein (topic: working with a recruiter): Managing Director of Recruitment Services
at BST America.
