WATER CHEMISTRY GUIDE
Follow BioGuards Simply chemical regime and Green
Pools could be a thing of the past.
Waterbalance
Balanced water - Water which is neither corrosive nor scale forming.
Controlled via pH, total alkalinity and calcium hardness, temperature and
TDS. Correct water balance provides ideal conditions for chemicals to work
effectively, to protect the pool finish and equipment and to ensure bather
comfort.
pH – a logorithm scale from 0 to 14 which indicates wheather a solution is
acid or alkali. Control of pH is essential as it helps bather comfort and
Chlorine efficiency.
Total alkalinity – A measure of dissolved bicarbonates, carbonates and
hydroxides which help to control the pH.
Calcium hardness – A measure of the amount of dissolved calcium and
other minerals.
TDS – Total dissolved solids, a measure of chemical pollutants in a pool.
Measured using a conductivity meter.

For best results this product should be ‘slug’ dosed into the deep end of the pool with the
filtration system running. Care must be taken when ‘slug’ dosing to ensure you don’t get
splashed with product.
Note: If large quantities are needed it is recommended that the total addition should be carried
out in stages with at least 24 hours between applications. Test total alkalinity between each
application and adjust dosage quantities if necessary.
CAUTION: IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THIS PRODUCT SHOULD ONLY BE HANDLED
WHILE WEARING GLOVES, GOGGLES AND RESPIRATORY MASK. IT SHOULD BE
HANDLED WITH CARE AT ALL TIMES.

Saturation Index
Saturation Index indicates the pool water balance by calculating the relationship between
the following factors:
Temperature
Calcium Hardness
Total Alkalinity
pH
Saturation Index predicts if corrosion will occur or scale will form, or if the water is neutral.
Page 12
Simply brilliant
Total Dissolved Solids
Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) consists of dissolved chemicals & minerals in pool water. Most of
it represents chlorides, calcium, magnesium, sulphates, stabilisers, carbonates, etc.
Maximum Recommended Level
1500mg/l - pools
1500mg/l - spas
TDS accumulates through the normal use of maintenance chemicals, make up water and
evaporation.
EFFECTS OF EXCESSIVE TDS
1. Loss of water clarity
2. Reduced chemical efficiency
PRACTICAL CORRECTION
Dilute with lower TDS make up water.

Step Two: Sparkling Water
Oxidisers restore water sparkle and comfort by destroying:
Harmful swimmer wastes: Non-filterable wastes such as perspiration,
cosmetics, hair spray and urine which can accumulate in the pool water
resulting in dull, lifeless water.
Nitrogen (N): Swimmer wastes contain nitrogen which ties up chlorine,
forming unpleasant chloramines. Chloramines cause "red eye" and have
an unpleasant pungent odour. There are three types of chloramines;
Monochloramines (NH2Cl), Dichloramines (NHCl2), Trichloramines or
Nitrogen Trichloride (NCl3).
Page 30
Simply brilliant
Chloramine Formation
Chloramines form when nitrogenous wastes and free available chlorine
combine.
Use BioGuard Burn Out Lite, BioGuard Bio Shock or BioGuard Bio
Shock Xtra to break apart the combined chlorines and allow the
nitrogen to dissipate.

Step Three: Prevent Algae
Algae is a microscopic, single celled plant life that reproduces rapidly.
It costs far more to cure an algae problem than it does to prevent it. Periodic
application of BioGuard Algae Inhibitor® prevents algae from multiplying.
Sales tip: Remember to remind customers that come in with an algae problem that
BioGuard Algae Inhibitor® is an easy and effective way of preventing it from
recurring.

Important Notes:
When treating an algae infested pool, ensure that all pool items that may have come in contact
with the pool water (i.e. maintenance equipment, inflatable’s, toys, covers etc.) are thoroughly
cleaned.
It is imperative that a Chlorine or Bromine residual is present for effective results. If algae
destruction is not achieved after 24-48 hours, test the Chlorine or Bromine level and ensure at
least 1.0 mg/l Free Available Chlorine is present, or 2.0 mg/l Total Bromine. If no sanitiser is
present, check for sanitiser demand and repeat oxidation treatment with BioGuard Bio Shock
or BioGuard Bio Shock Xtra. Do NOT use BioGuard Burn Out Lite for this function.
As the sanitiser is the primary killer, ensure that the pH is balanced between
7.4-7.6 prior to the BioGuard Erase application.
Always brush the pool surfaces prior to application to ensure that as much of the algae as
possible is exposed to BioGuard Erase and the sanitiser residual.

Backwash the filter and ensure the filtration is running. Add to the pool by slowly applying the
required amount of BioGuard® Optimiser via a clean and empty skimmer.
BioGuard® Optimiser is stable in pool water and is not consumed like other pool products. The
reasons for BioGuard® Optimiser levels falling will be due to splash out, backwashing and
dilution by heavy rainfall.
Optimiser test strips are available.

Apply slowly and directly into the water around the deep end of the pool.
Allow pump and filter to operate for at least eight (8) hours after application.
NOTES: Prior to the addition of BioGuard Polysheen Blue, ensure that all pool equipment is
operating properly including pump, filter, heater and skimmer.
Ensure that the filter is running efficiently in order to establish that the cloudy water is not the
result of worn elements or a dirty filter.
Do not use more than the recommended dosage. Due to the highly concentrated formula,
adding more than the recommended dosage is wasteful and could reduce product
efficiency.
