OBSTETRICAL NURSING THEORY
Catalog Description:
81– Obstetrical Nursing Theory
2 units
Nursing interventions that assist the family with adaptation during the childbearing cycle including
assessments and management of the mother and newborn during the antepartal, intrapartal, and
postpartal periods; emphasis on the involvement of the total family; reproductive related health care
problems of women. Designed to assist Licensed Vocational Nurses in preparation for the Registered
Nurse Licensing examination. Prerequisite: Valid California LVN license. 2 hours lecture and 1 hour
skills lab.

Prerequisite Skills:
Valid California LVN license.
Expected Outcomes for Students:
Upon completion of the course, the student should be able to demonstrate ability to identify and/or
describe:
1.
concepts in family centered care;
2.
normal biopsychosocial changes that take place in individual family members during the
childbearing cycle;
3.
developmental readiness for pregnancy and parenthood;
4.
early stages of family/child nurturance and bonding;
5.
alternate styles of infant attachment and care in families of various ethnic backgrounds;
6.
conflicts related to birth control and termination of pregnancy;
7.
issues of informed consent for treatment in the context of genetic counseling, adolescent
pregnancy, competent adult pregnancy, and treatment of the fetus;
8.
biopsychosocial assessment and nursing management of the normal and abnormal
experiences of the expectant mother during the antepartal period;
9.
biopsychosocial assessment and nursing management of the normal and abnormal
experiences of the expectant mother during the intrapartal period;
10.
biopsychosocial assessment and nursing management of the normal and abnormal
experiences of the mother during the early postpartal period;
11.
biopsychosocial assessment and nursing management of the normal newborn infant;
12.
biopsychosocial assessment and nursing management of sexually transmitted diseases;
13.
biopsychosocial assessment and nursing management of the addicted mother and infant;
14.
concepts of human sexuality related to childbearing years;
15.
concepts and interventions related to nutrition for pregnancy, postpartum, and newborn
care;
16.
concepts and interventions related to fetal diagnosis;
17.
application of mathematical principles to administration of adult and newborn care.

Application of the adaptation model based on Roy’s theory to changes of roles within the
family
The normal maternal-newborn cycle
The high-risk maternal-newborn cycle with emphasis on prenatal diagnosis, prematurity,
pregnancy-induced hypertension, hemorrhagic complications, diabetic complications,
antigen-antibody complications, addictive complications, teenage pregnancy, pregnancy
after age 35, and cultural complications of childbearing
Methodology of fertility control and termination of pregnancy, including nurses’ roles
therein
Aspects of informed consent for treatment as it relates to adolescent pregnancy, the
competent pregnant adult, the fetus and the father of the child
Nutrition as it relates to the maternal cycle, with emphasis on cultural diversity
Related nursing and mathematical skills

a. Student will complete all workbook assignments on a bi-weekly basis.
b. Student will complete all critical thinking assignments (such as applying the nursing
process to selected case studies)
