NanoDays 2013 Join the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) and the CNSE Children’s Museum of Science and Technology (CNSE CMOST) during the 2013 NanoDays for an exploration of all things Nano NanoDays is a nationwide festival of educational programs about nanoscale science and engineering and its potential impact on the future. NanoDays events are organized by participants in the Nanoscale Informal Science Education Network (NISE Net) and take place at over 200 science museums, research centers, and universities across the country from Puerto Rico to Hawaii. NanoDays engages people of all ages in learning about this emerging field of science, which holds the promise of developing revolutionary materials and technologies. NanoDays Activities: At each location, children and families will be able to explore a variety of hands-on activities, including: •Exploring Fabrication- Gummy Capsules •Exploring Materials- Hydrogel •Exploring Materials- Memory Metal •Exploring Nano & Society- Space Elevator •Exploring Nano & Society- You Decide! •Exploring Products- Computer Hard Drives •Exploring Products- Liquid Crystal Displays •Exploring Properties- Invisibility •Exploring Properties- UV Bracelets •Exploring Size- Moving Molecules •Exploring Tools- 3D Imaging 2013 Schedule of Events Monday, April 1 Saratoga Springs Public Library 49 Henry Street, Saratoga Springs, NY 12866-3271 11 am – 1 pm NanoDays Activities & Gowning Activity: Stephen Stewart, CNSE Equipment Evaluation and Support Specialist, will show children and families how to gown up in the “bunny suits” worn in CNSE’s high-tech cleanrooms and conduct several hands-on, nano-experiments. Tuesday, April 2 Schenectady County Public Library; Central Library 99 Clinton Street, Schenectady, NY 12305 11 am – 1 pm NanoDays Activities & Nano Bacteria activity: Learn about bacteria while making your own molecular motor and watching it swim. Led by Dr. J. Andres Melendez, CNSE Associate Head of the Nanobioscience Constellation and Professor of Nanobioscience and CNSE students. Wednesday, April 3 Albany Public Library; Main Library 161 Washington Avenue, Albany, NY 12210 11 am – 1 pm NanoDays Activities & E2TAC Energy Activities: Members of CNSE’s E2TAC team will teach children and families about fuel cells, solar energy and photovoltaic panels. Students will have the opportunity to play with model fuel-cell cars and experiment with working photovoltaic panels, which will power small items such as a calculator, small fan, or a radio. Thursday, April 4 Trinity Alliance of the Capital Region 20 Trinity Place, Albany NY 12202 3 pm – 5 pm NanoDays Activities & Innovations in Nanomedicine: This program will examine current and future applications of nanotechnology in medicine, using a life-sized human torso to conduct nanomedicine demonstrations and medical equipment to demonstrate current and potential applications of nanotechnology in medical practice. Led by members of the CNSE Nanobio team Friday, April 5 Troy Public Library, Main Library 100 Second Street, Troy, NY 12180 11 am – 1 pm NanoDays Activities and Polymer Activity: Students will learn about polymers and their role in nanotechnology and will build a polymer chain to take home with them. Led by CNSE students. Saturday, April 6 NanoDays Celebration at The CNSE Children’s Museum of Science and Technology (CNSE CMOST) 250 Jordan Road (in Rensselaer Technology Park), Troy, New York 12180 11 am – 3 pm Join CNSE CMOST staff & faculty and staff from The College of Nanoscale Science & Engineering (CNSE) for an exploration of all things nanotechnology! We will have presentations, experiments and demonstrations throughout the day that explore different topics and concepts in nanotechnology.
