prestigious
FRANDSON Award for Literature
IN THE FIELD OF CONTINUING HIGHER EDUCATION
2014 Call for Nominations
The University Professional & Continuing Education Association (UPCEA) invites nominations for the
Phillip E. Frandson Award for Literature in the Field of Continuing Education. The award is presented in
honor of the late Phillip E. Frandson, former Dean of UCLA Extension and 1977-78 UPCEA President.
The award recognizes excellence in achievement for literature written about the theory or practice of
continuing higher education. Nominated books will be noted in the UPCEA newsletter (e- and print),
bringing them to the attention of over 2,300 higher education professionals.
Benefits to the Award Winner
The award winning book draws the attention of continuing higher education professionals nationwide.
Benefits include:
 The winning book is entitled to display the Frandson Book Award emblem on the cover for
current and all future press runs.
 The winning book will be reviewed in the UPCEA Newsletter, distributed to 2,300 professionals
in Continuing Education and their university offices.
 The winning book and sales information about it will be displayed prominently in the exhibition
hall of the UPCEA Annual Conference, hosted March 26th through 28th, 2014, in Miami, Florida.
 The author(s) of the winning book are invited to participate in the award ceremony at the
UPCEA Annual Conference and to present a talk on the topic.
 The author(s) also receives an attractive Frandson Book Award plaque.
Award Criteria
Nominated books will be reviewed by the UPCEA Frandson committee composed of national scholars
and practitioners in the field of continuing higher education. The Award is reserved for extraordinary
works that make significant contributions to the field. Thus the Award may not be given each year. The
Frandson Book Award will be presented to the author(s) of a book or monograph which best satisfies
the following criteria:
 The work is published in 2013.
 The work is important to the theory or practice of continuing higher education in colleges and
universities.
 The work exemplifies originality and a superior quality of prose in the English language.
Eligible content includes:
 Management and leadership in continuing higher education,
 Adult education and innovative instructional strategies,
 Adults as learners,
 Distance education and instructional design,
 Marketing and/or financial management for continuing higher education,
 Examination of the future of continuing higher education,

Role of lifelong learning in economic development, globalization and broader public policy
issues.

Nomination Process




Nominations are invited from authors, editors, publishers, and individuals.
Please send one copy of the nominated work to each member of the review committee (names
and addresses are listed below). Works not sent to each committee member and the chair may
be disqualified.
Nominated books must be received by December 1, 2013.
If you have a book appropriate for nomination that will be published between December 1,
2013 and December 31, 2013, please contact Amy Heitzman at aheitzman@upcea.edu or
202.400.2683 about possible late submission.
Notification of Award
The committee chair will notify the winning author(s) by late January, 2014. UPCEA will make a formal
announcement and presentation of the Frandson Award at the 99th Annual Conference in Miami,
Florida, March 26th through 28th, 2014.
