Auxiliary methods such as the movement of joints and application of dry and steam heat are used. Various types of massage techniques are used to affect different body problems. Techniques include: kneading (using light or hard rhythmic stroking, pressing and lifting the muscle), tapotement (tapping) and Rolfing (involving deep massage with intense pressure). Trigger-point therapy focuses on a painful area in a muscle and Reflexology is applied to the specific points on the feet and hands to correspond to particular parts of the body. Massage Therapists may use rollers, vibrators, and heat and cold applications to produce desired results. People who enjoy working within this career usually have social and/or athletic skills. They are interested in the human relationship more than working with things or ideas. People in this career are sometimes described as extroverted, sociable, persistent, and patient. The employment outlook for Massage Therapists is good. A ten-fold increase in new members over the last ten years has been reported by the American Massage Therapy Association which has more than 15,000 members. The growing acceptance of massage therapy as an important health care discipline has led to the creation of additional jobs. GENERAL OBJECTIVES The Massage Therapy Program is designed to meet the need for qualified Massage Therapists in hospitals, clinics, nursing homes, chiropractic centers, cosmetology salons, sports rehabilitation clinics, rehabilitation/ physical therapy providers, salons, resorts, spas, and cruise ships. More than two-thirds of all Massage Therapists are self-employed. PROGRAM INFORMATION The Massage Therapy Program offered at Pensacola State College, which is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, is offered at the Pensacola campus. The Massage Therapy Program produces graduates qualified to take the national certification examination and apply for licensure as a Massage Therapist in the State of Florida. Students completing the program will receive a vocational certificate, which certifies that the student has attained job-entry competence. GENERAL INFORMATION Applicants must complete the application process and meet the selection criteria. To be considered, the applicant MUST HAVE A GPA OF 2.0 OR BETTER. TABE: The State of Florida has mandated that all students enrolling in certificate programs are required to undergo a skills assessment process utilizing the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) examination. When you apply to the Massage Therapy Program, you need to schedule an appointment to take the TABE test by calling the Testing Center appointment line (484-1987). Three areas are assessed in the TABE test: Reading, Language, and Math. If your score is below the required grade in any of the three sections, you will be required to sign up for remediation for that section with the Adult Basic Education Department and complete it before graduation from the Massage Therapy Program. Each section is one vocational credit for which you will be required to pay. The quicker you take the TABE test, get it scored, and sign up for any necessary remediation, the quicker you get it finished. You need to sign up and complete the remediation in the Adult Basic Education Department before the Massage Therapy class starts so you will not be doing both. The TABE test is a diagnostic examination; students do not pass or fail. Being diagnostic, areas of strengths and weaknesses are identified. However, students enrolled in the Massage Therapy program will need to master the required level of the test material to complete the requirement of their vocational program. LICENSE INFORMATION Upon completion of graduation requirements, the student is eligible to take the next available Florida Massage Therapy Certification Examination. State law requires exam applicants to verify under oath that they are free of physical or mental defect and alcohol or substance abuse. Convicted felon cases are reviewed on an individual basis. For more information, please contact the Florida Department of Health, Division of Medical Qualifications Assurance, Board of Massage, and Tallahassee, FL 32399-3259. 3 FINANCIAL AID, SCHOLARSHIPS, ETC. The most common sources of infection include blood-to-blood (i.e. infected patient’s blood in cut on your hand), accidental needle stick with contaminated needle, transfusion of infected blood. Most people recover completely after two to six months of recuperation. Up to 10% become chronic carriers (no symptoms but transmitting virus to others), while only 1-2 % die as a result of the disease. Some develop chronic active hepatitis or cirrhosis. Hepatitis B increases risk of liver cancer by 300%. Therefore, because students are in daily contact with patients/clients who may be unknowingly infected with a serious illness that could accidentally be transmitted to others, immunization against Hepatitis B is recommended. VACCINE Hepatitis B vaccines are produced from the plasma of Chronic HBV carriers (Heptavax) or synthetically produced as Recumbivax B. the vaccine contains highly purified, formalininactivated Hepatitis B antigen (viral coating material). They have been tested in chimpanzees and humans for safety and efficacy for over 200 years. Vaccination includes a series of 3 doses over a six-month period. Most healthy people develop high levels of antibodies providing protection against Hepatitis B. A titer (blood test) drawn on the third dose can determine the level of protection achieved and whether continued vaccination is necessary. A booster is recommended every 5 years. There is no evidence that the vaccine has ever caused Hepatitis B. However, persons infected with HBV prior to taking the vaccine may develop hepatitis in spite of immunization. The duration of immunity is known at this time. Cost of the vaccination series ranges from $150-$300. POSSIBLE VACCINE SIDE EFFECTS Incidence of side effects is very low. No serious side effects have been reported with the vaccine. Some people experience redness or tenderness at the injection site. Low-grade fever, rash, nausea, joint pain, and mild fatigue have been reported. It is possible that more serious side effects may be identified with more extensive use. If you have any questions about Hepatitis B or the vaccine, please ask your instructor. 10 PENSACOLA STATE COLLEGE Department of Professional Service Careers HEPATITIS B VACCINE RELEASE FORM DATE __________________________ STUDENT NAME: ______________________________________ Information regarding Hepatitis B and the HBV vaccine has been provided to me, and it has been recommended that I be vaccinated prior to working with patients/clients in clinical settings.
