Call for Applications from Cypress College Full-time Faculty for Cypress College Student Learning Outcomes Coordinator The position of the Student Learning Outcomes Coordinator for Cypress College is now open to FULL-TIME tenured faculty at Cypress College. In Spring 2007, the coordinator will be expected to meet with the SLO Team to make preparations for Fall 2007 and will be paid on a professional expert contract for up to 8 hours a week outside of his/her teaching schedule. In Fall 2007, the position is a 40% reassigned time position with a minimum of 16 hours a week on campus to provide coordination of the campus-wide student learning outcomes training, implementation, and assessment efforts, particularly as they apply to curriculum issues and accreditation reports. The Student Learning Outcomes-College Assessment Techniques (SLO-CATs) Process to date: Fall 2005: the SLO-CATs Team – Randy Martinez, Pychology; Betty Disney, faculty Online Coordinator; Nancy Deutsch, faculty Staff Development Coordinator; and Heather Brown, Director of Institutional Research—planned the process for writing and assessing student learning outcomes and reported the plan to the Academic Senate. Spring 2006: Betty Disney and Randy Martinez, the SLO-CATs Facilitators, conducted Student Learning Outcomes Workshops for 53 instructional departments. During the workshops, each department’s faculty wrote 35 student learning outcomes for at least one course in their curriculum and posted these SLOs on Blackboard. Fall 2006: Randy Martinez conducted assessment workshops for 30 academic departments to help faculty write an assessment plan for one of the SLOs they wrote in Spring 2006. Spring 2007: Randy will work with faculty to implement their assessment plans and to report results. He will also conduct additional assessment workshops for those departments that have not finished their assessment plans. Cypress College Student Learning Outcomes Coordinator Job Description Major Duties and Responsibilities: Serve as the day-to-day Student Learning Outcomes Coordinator. Chair the SLO-CATs Team meetings to develop a cohesive, integrated process for assessing and documenting SLOs, and reporting on that process and results. Schedule, organize, set the agenda, and keep minutes for all SLO team meetings. Organize faculty and staff dialogues to plan the direction of the SLO-CATs process. Coordinate training and education opportunities for faculty and staff. Work with Academic Senate, departments, administrators, and different constituent groups to identify divisional/area representatives for the SLO-CATs Team. Monitor departments’ progress in moving through the assessment process. Track and follow up on the various SLO-CATs stages. Track participation in the various training events. Record the progress in developing SLOs campus-wide. Collect and archive assessment plans and reports. Provide updates to appropriate audiences. Distribute a regular newsletter to the campus community updating achievements related to SLOs. Ensure campus-wide communication and discussion of SLOs and their assessment, via Blackboard, @Cypress, and e-mail. Write an annual executive summary of progress. Serve as the lead advocate for the need for SLOs on campus and their influence on student learning. Experience in coordinating training and education opportunities for faculty and staff. Program management experience. Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to facilitate collaborative work across college divisions and departments. Sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of students. Commitment to academic excellence in diverse student populations. Ability to write well. An understanding of and ability to use Blackboard or other course management system, or commitment to learn to use a course management system. 2
