Job Description
Post:
Volunteer Co-ordinator, No.1 Royal Crescent
Part time 17.5 hours a week preferably worked across the
week (i.e. mornings)
Terms:
£15,000 pro rata
14 days holiday per year (inclusive of bank holidays)
1 year fixed term contract
Reporting to:
Visitor Services Manager, No.1 Royal Crescent
Purpose of role:
To recruit, induct, train and help co-ordinate a team of c.
200 volunteer guides at No.1 Royal Crescent to ensure a full
rota of volunteers at the museum at all times.
Background
No. 1 Royal Crescent has recently undergone a major redevelopment project to reunite the
house with its original service wing. The revitalized historic house museum reopened to
the public in June 2013, double the size with improved and more accessible visitor facilities.
The team of volunteer guides are vital to the visitor experience and to the continued
success of the museum.
The main activities are described below. In addition, the post holder may be required to
undertake other duties and responsibilities compatible with the overall scope of the post.
Main duties
Volunteer recruitment and induction



Creating a programme of volunteer recruitment throughout the year to ensure a
steady flow of new volunteers at No.1 Royal Crescent
Managing the process of recruitment including advertising for volunteers, organising
informal interviews, assessing suitability, and taking up references.
Setting up a programme of induction in conjunction with the Visitor Services
Manager, the Curator and the Education Officer.
Volunteer Co-ordination



Organising and preparing the monthly rota of guides including filling vacancies in the
rota where possible and keeping track of information on guide availability, holiday
commitments etc
As required and in conjunction with the Visitor Services Manager, greeting volunteers
on arrival and ensuring they are given all relevant information.
Helping to ensure a strong team spirit amongst the volunteers and assist the
engagement and retention of volunteers through organising outings, social events,
Christmas lunch and winter lecturers etc the latter in collaboration with the Curator.
Volunteer training




Setting up a programme of training in conjunction with the Visitor Services Manager,
the Curator and the Education Officer.
Ensuring that all volunteers receive training on health and safety and fire
procedures.
Assisting the Visitor Services Manager with the production and updating of the
volunteer handbook.
Setting up a volunteer e-newsletter and volunteer section of the website
General


Some general office administration including answering the telephone and directing
queries you cannot deal with to the Visitor Services Manager.
If required be a museum key holder.

Experience of working with volunteers or as a volunteer
Experience of working with the public
Enthusiasm for history/18th century
Trustworthy
Highly desirable


Experience of managing volunteers
Experience of working within historic houses/museums
