Instructor’s Name ________________________________________ Quantitative Literacy (QL) Course for which you are seeking approval (department and number): ______________________________________________ Requirement Each student must complete a six-credit QL requirement. At least 3 credit hours must be completed within the first 30 credit hours of coursework. The six-credit QL requirement may be met in one of three ways: A student may take two courses, MTH 116 and MTH 117. MTH should be a prerequisite for MTH 117. A student may take two alternate courses offered by the department of Mathematics and numbered above MTH 117, as specified by their major program. A student may take a single mathematics course (MTH 116 or a suitable substitute) and then complete the QL requirement by taking a QL designated course. Objectives 1. Interpret mathematical models such as formulae, graphs, tables, and schematics and draw inferences from them. 2. Represent and interpret mathematical information that is presented symbolically, visually numerically, or verbally. 3. Use arithmetic, algebraic, geometric, statistical models and technology or appropriate combinations of these to solve problems. 4. Estimate and check answers to mathematical problems in order to determine their reasonableness, identify alternatives, and select optimal results. 5. Recognize the limits of mathematical and statistical models and be able to explain those limitations in context. CRITERIA A course approved for the QL requirement must meet all of the following criteria: 1. Address the objectives outlined above. 2. Focus at least 2 credit hours of coursework on QL. 3. Provide explicit instruction in quantitative methods and quantitative reasoning. 4. Demonstrate to students ways in which quantitative skills are important for the particular subject of the course. 1 Instructor’s Name ________________________________________ 5. Base at least 50% of the final grade on evaluated quantitative exercises. QUESTIONS Please answer the following questions and provide a current syllabus. Your syllabus must include a statement of the criteria for this category. 1. How will this course promote the quantitative literacy learning objectives outlined above? 2. Which assignments for this class will meet the quantitative literacy requirement? 3. How will quantitative literacy skills be linked to the subject matter of the course? 4. How (e.g. based on which assignments) will quantitative literacy constitute at least 50% of a student’s grade? 2
