It is located in Maritime Greenwich in the Old Royal Naval College on the Banks of the river Thames. The buildings are of great architectural and historical interest and are part of a World Heritage Site. The School has over 2000 students on campus including over 50 PhD students and over 3000 off campus. The School has four academic departments: Mathematical Sciences, Information Systems and Multimedia, Computer Science and Computer Engineering Technology, offering a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes which have a vocational flavour and are accredited by the relevant professional bodies. The Department of Mathematical Sciences offers undergraduate programmes in Mathematics, Statistics, Mathematics for Decision Science and Mathematics, Statistics and Computing AND Financial Mathematics. We are currently developing an MSc in Applicable Mathematics and in Computational Finance. The National Student Survey has shown an outstanding level of student satisfaction and we have performed well in the Guardian League Table. We were delighted with the recognition given to one of our senior Mathematics staff members, Tony Mann, as the THES 2010 Innovative Teacher of the Year. 1 The research in the School underpins our undergraduate and postgraduate courses. Our prizewinning work on computer simulation of fires and evacuation procedures has gained publicity worldwide, with features on television in both the UK and abroad. We also have active research groups in statistics and operational research, temporal reasoning, artificial intelligence, parallel computing, data mining, case-based reasoning, networking, information systems integrity, elearning and numerical modelling as well as a number of other individual research projects. Overall Purpose of Job You will contribute to the delivery, management and development of our portfolio of undergraduate mathematics programmes and the pastoral support of students. Main Activities and Duties 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Teach undergraduate and postgraduate students in Mathematical Sciences. Contribute to the pastoral care of the students. Contribute to the department’s recruitment and outreach activities. Undertake research and scholarly activity in Computational Finance. Contribute to the management and administration of the School and to curriculum development. SCOPE You will deliver courses on our undergraduate and postgraduate mathematics programmes and will contribute to curriculum development. You will have the ability to contribute to the teaching of courses in financial mathematics and statistics is essential, and teaching will include the computing skills required by professional mathematicians. You will also take part actively in the development of a Master’s in Computational Finance. You will be expected to undergo relevant continuing professional development. You will also contribute to the pastoral support of students, including personal tutoring, and will help students acquire study and employability skills. You will work to promote enthusiasm for the subject amongst our students, for example by supporting MathSoc and extracurricular activities. Department staff are expected to contribute to recruitment and outreach activities such as Open Days and Masterclasses, some of which may take place at weekends. You will also engage with national initiatives such as the National HE STEM Programme and other developments in the mathematics community. You will engage in appropriate research and scholarly activity. PERSON SPECIFICATION CRITERIA FOR SELECTION (Codes: E = Essential, D = Desirable) Education/Training PhD in financial mathematics or financial statistics with a strong computational bias; a PhD in a related area with relevant professional quantitative finance experience is also acceptable E 2 Experience and Skills The successful candidate will be expected to have evidenced outstanding enthusiasm for teaching, either mathematically based courses at University level or professionally within the finance industry. In particular they must be able to show: Experience of developing and teaching mathematically based courses in HE or in Commerce Experience of providing pastoral care to undergraduates or similar Subject knowledge of financial mathematics, and/or financial statistics Ability to innovate in teaching and assessment Relevant research/enterprise/fund generation capability Personal Qualities Clear communicator Team player Flexible Enthusiastic and adventurous Ability to deliver to deadlines E E E E E E E E E E Other Requirements Since the post involves outreach work with schools and young people, an enhanced CRB check will be required. AC2 (Lecturer) Contributing at a course and cognate subject level in teaching and research including: developing course materials for teaching and learning at undergraduate and potentially postgraduate levels working as part of a small team in delivering courses as part of a programme undertaking research and scholarly activity alongside personal development in your subject area providing effective communication of complex ideas in a range of academic situations AC3 (Senior Lecturer) Take a key role in shaping and co-ordinating aspects of the department’s work in research and teaching at a programme level, across groups of courses including: leading a small team developing new course structures as part of programme development mentoring and supporting team members in research, teaching and learning situations being an effective communicator across a programme team 3 developing, employing and disseminating innovation teaching and assessment techniques at undergraduate and postgraduate levels managing and providing administration support for programmes under the University’s Learning and Quality structures A Market Premium Payment (subject to regular review) may be available if the appointee qualifies.
