PARISH OF ESHER CHRIST CHURCH with ST GEORGE’S, WEST END SHARING THE POWER OF GOD’S LOVE IN ESHER Reconciling - Sustaining - Guiding - Healing SECOND SUNDAY OF EPIPHANY 18 JANUARY 2015 WELCOME TO OUR SERVICES THE COLLECT FOR THE DAY If you are new to the parish or worshipping with us for the first time please introduce yourselves to a member of the clergy or one of our churchwardens or sidespeople. This sheet gives some words that will be needed in the services and notices about the life of the church communities. Please do take it home. Almighty God, in Christ you make all things new: transform the poverty of our nature by the riches of your grace, and in the renewal of our lives make known your heavenly glory; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. We also lay on ourselves the obligation to charge ourselves yearly one-third of a shekel for the service of the house of our God: for the rows of bread, the regular grainoffering, the regular burnt-offering, the sabbaths, the new moons, the appointed festivals, the sacred donations, and the sin-offerings to make atonement for Israel, and for all the work of the house of our God. We have also cast lots among the priests, the Levites, and the people, for the wood-offering, to bring it into the house of our God, by ancestral houses, at appointed times, year by year, to burn on the altar of the Lord our God, as it is written in the law. We obligate ourselves to bring the first fruits of our soil and the first fruits of all fruit of every tree, year by year, to the house of the Lord; also to bring to the house of our God, to the priests who minister in the house of our God, the firstborn of our sons and of our livestock, as it is written in the law, and the firstlings of our herds and of our flocks; and to bring the first of our dough, and our contributions, the fruit of every tree, the wine and the oil, to the priests, to the chambers of the house of our God; and to bring to the Levites the tithes from our soil, for it is the Levites who collect the tithes in all our rural towns. And the priest, the descendant of Aaron, shall be with the Levites when the Levites receive the tithes; and the Levites shall bring up a tithe of the tithes to the house of our God, to the chambers of the storehouse. For the people of Israel and the sons of Levi shall bring the contribution of grain, wine, and oil to the storerooms where the vessels of the sanctuary are, and where the priests that minister, and the gatekeepers and the singers are. We will not neglect the house of our God. GOSPEL Luke 21.1-4 He looked up and saw rich people putting their gifts into the treasury; he also saw a poor widow put in two small copper coins. He said, ‘Truly I tell you, this poor widow has put in more than all of them; for all of them have contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.’’ PARISH NOTICES Parish Funding Programme The Parish Funding Programme launches on Sunday 25 January at both our regular 9am and 10.30am services. There will be no 8am service that day. Please do come and hear about; our parish vision, celebrate God’s work among us in 2014, what we understand are God’s priorities for us for the year ahead, and our associated funding requirement. This is an important day in the life of our community and I would strongly encourage us to be part of it at all possible. It will be followed by a Thanksgiving Service on the Sunday 8 February. It should be a wonderful occasion. Confirmation - This involves undertaking a period of teaching with a view to the public ownership of our baptism into the faith, and thereby our participation in the transformation of the world. May I invite any interested adults who would like to be confirmed (there is no obligation at the end) to sign up on the sheets provided in each church or drop me an email. The journey, which I shall lead, provisionally begins Thursday 26 February for 5 weeks. The confirmation service is scheduled for 5 May here at Christ Church. Winter Shelter 2015 - Transform have applied to run a homeless shelter in Walton-on-Thames from Jan - Mar 2015. They need donations of money, household goods and time. Please consider this, look at the poster at the back of the church and the website, if you are able. Thank you. Children’s Party - A reminder that the party is this afternoon at 2.30pm at West End Village Hall. Looking forward to the Punch & Judy show! See you there! Week of Prayer for Christian Unity This is an international event and the aim is to pray for the unity of all Christian people as we share in Christ’s ministry and to meet and pray with fellow Christians of different denominations. Christ Church will be hosting a short service of prayer on 22 January at 12:00pm, followed by a soup and roll lunch. For full details of times and venues this coming week please see overleaf. All are welcome. Music on the Green - The next lunchtime concert on Wednesday 21 January will be performed by Oliver Macfarlane, one of our organists. Oliver’s programme will include the major organ ‘blockbuster’, Liszt's Fantasia & Fugue on Ad nos, ad salutarem undam. Enjoy a memorable start to 2015! Parish Funding Programme Private Prayer: Please commit to using this prayer daily over the coming months as we express our dependence and trust in God for our common life as a church community. Every week Lord we bring gifts of bread, wine, money and ourselves to You. The gifts which come from You are on their way back to You. Your gifts to us are making us givers, which like the circulation of our blood, keeps us alive in you. Help us Lord to rejoice in the manifold gifts You have given us, returning worthy praise by the offering of our lives and money in your service; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen 8am Service - Due to the Parish Funding Programme launch on Sunday 25 January there will be no 8am service. It is hoped regular attendees may be able to join one of the main services on this especial occasion in the life of our community. Lent Course - This year the Lenten Study Group, Blessings Abound, will be led by Helen Coulson and Carol & Stewart Henderson and will look at some of the Blessings given in the Bible. It will run for five weeks, at Christ Church, starting on Wednesday 25 February at 8pm and Saturday 28 February at 10am. Everyone is welcome. Come to as many as you can.
