WORCESTERSHIRE & DUDLEY HISTORIC CHURCHES TRUST A Celebration of William Butterfield and Victorian Architecture VISIT BY COACH TO RUGBY AND ALVECHURCH: FRIDAY 8th MAY 2015 2014 marked the bicentenary of the birth of William Butterfield, one of the leading architects of the Victorian period, who is renowned for his use of 'polychrome' brick and stone in his buildings. We are taking this opportunity to visit his Church of St Laurence at Alvechurch (185761), on the way to Rugby. We will visit Rugby School with many buildings (1859-72) by Butterfield; from his tour de force - the School Chapel - to those around the Close (where Rugby football originated), including an early cricket pavilion and Butterfield's only swimming pool. Butterfield designed St Andrew's Church (1877-85) in the town and we are also invited to visit St Marie's Roman Catholic Church (1846) with work by Pugin, perhaps the most celebrated Victorian architect. We will depart by coach from Croft Road, Worcester at 9.30am. After a coffee and comfort break at Hopwood Park Services, we will visit St Laurence's Church, Alvechurch. On arrival in Rugby with time for lunch and look at St Andrew's Church, we shall be taken on a guided tour of Rugby School, before finishing our visit to the town at St Marie's Church. We will break for tea and a comfort stop at Corley Services on the return journey. We aim to return to Worcester by 6.30pm. The cost of the day is £25 per person to include a place on the coach, the tour of the school, and donations to the churches. Refreshments and lunch are not included; we shall make our own arrangements. Places are strictly limited and will be allocated on a 'first come first served' basis.
