SYLMAR HIGH SCHOOL “Building on Excellence” ESL Intro and 1A SPRING 2009 Ellen Campbell ESL is a class for students who speak no English at all or who have not had English training in their home country. It is not appropriate for students who were born in the U.S. and who have been in L.A. schools since elementary grades. Standard LS-2 Identify key details. EL-1 Standard WS-2 Write paragraphs at an elementary level. All Units Standard WS-2 Fill in forms and charts. Students will write short paragraphs, also dictations, listening activities, and answers to questions. EL-3 Read at own level to expand vocabulary. Standard RL-1 Use expanded vocabulary. Standard RL-1 Paraphrase All Units Paraphrase to explain vocabulary. EL-2 Standard – Use standard grammar at appropriate level. Teachermade materials Students will score at appropriate number for their level on a Department grammar test. (showing knowledge of standard grammar or of spoken English). Students in Introduction only may pass to the next level with C, while repeating semester. Students in 1A must pass with C or fail and repeat with F. Student must attend class every day to succeed. Absent students may make up homework and Unit tests, but not dictated tests or Selection Tests. Tardy students will be sent to the dean’s detention and will not be allowed to make up missed work. Homework is assigned every night. Behavioral problems will result in (1) parent phone call by teacher in Spanish; (2) Mr. Quezada, discipline room; and (3) parent conference with teacher and counselor, Mrs. Garcia-Jimenez. Required textbooks. Text is District-mandated High Point. Practical English 1 is used for homework and grammar support. Students may not leave texts in room, or they will be returned to the book room. Student Materials. Students must have the texts, paper, and a pencil sharpened before class daily. Homework. Students have homework every night. How to help your child succeed. Tutoring is available after school and on Saturdays. Please feel free to contact the school or teacher if you have any questions.
