Such an inspiring journey might build up your
expectations of Nuwara Eliya. It is easy to see why the
early British settlers fell for it. After the heat and dust of Colombo, the salubrious climate and
the breathtaking landscape are a soothing balm, as Sir Edward Barnes discovered when he was
governing the Island in 1828 and used it as his up-country retreat. The Hakgala Botanical
Gardens, (the second after Peradeniya - Kandy) is situated south of Nuwara Eliya which was
established in 1860. Beyond Hakgala lies Horton Plains, a windswept plateau over 2,000 meters
high. These misty, silent grasslands streaked with icy rivulets, offer some excellent walks, the
most famous being to World's End, a 4 km hike.
Lunch in St. Andrews hotel
On completion proceed to Colombo
