Anotace
Pracovní list je určený k rozšíření znalostí o hlavním městě VB Londýně. Zejména seznamuje studenty
s místy spojenými s královskou rodinou a s tak zvanou Královskou cestou.
Metodický pokyn
Žáci si přečtou text a rozhodnou se, jestli otázky za textem jsou pravdivé nebo nepravdivé. V druhé části
studenti přiřadí obrázky ke správným názvům míst.
Žáci obdrží PL v písemné podobě a samostatně vypracují zadaný úkol. Časový limit je 30 minut.

Through the centuries, Britain´s kings and queens have built and bought places to live, to work or
as centres of government.
The official Royal residences are family homes for members of the Royal family, but they are also
used for housing the offices of staff, to entertain official guests and to host formal events and
ceremonies.
The official Royal residences are Buckingham Palace and Windsor Castle but there are some other
Royal residences which are owned by the Queen and run by an independent charity. They are
known as Historical Royal Palaces.
The official Royal Route starts by Admirality Arch, one of the national memorials to Queen
Victoria. It leads to The Mall, the route of the royal and state processions. It is closed to public
transport. The area of St James´s is named after a hospital for lepers. At St James Palace, king
Charles I spent his last night alive before his walk across St James´s Park to Whitehall where he
was executed. Later king Charles II made the palace his home and it has been a favourite place of
all the British monarchs since.
Clarence House, placed near St James Palace was the home of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the
Queen Mother.
At the head of The Mall is The Queen Victoria Memorial. This statue lies in the shadow of the
best-known palace in the world: Buckingham Palace. It was first built in 1703 for the Duke of
Buckingham. Queen Victoria made it a permanent home of the court in 1837. It was too small so
in 1847 an east wing was added. The present palace with classical front built of Portland stone was

reconstructed in 1913. The first floor balcony is the scene of formal appearances of the Royal
Family on important occasions. Buckingham Palace is like a small town. There are 700 rooms. The
Royal Family occupies the north wing of the palace.
The Royal Mews, where the Queen horses are stabled, is open to the public. It was built by John
Nash in 1826 and houses the collection of coaches and the state carriage used for corronations.
Kensington Palace is the place where prince Willam with his wife and their son live. It is also the
home of William´s brother prince Harry. It was rebuilt in 1689 by Sir Christopher Wren, architect
of St Paul´s Cathedral. It is made of red brick. The State Apartments were restored and opened to
public in 1975.
Kensington Gardens, is now a public park, separated from Hyde Park by the Serpentine lake.
The Albert Memorial is a part of Kensington Gardens. It is an elaborate memorial to Prince Albert.
It is placed opposite The Royal Albert Hall, an oval amphitheatre covered by a glass dome. It is the
home of concerts from the classical concerts to pop. It has 8,000 seats. The famous organ with its
10,000 pipes, is one of the most famous in the world.
The Diana, Princess of Wales Memorial Fountain is a memorial dedicated to Diana, Princess of
Wales. It was designed to express Diana´s spirit and love of children. It is located in the southwest
corner of Hyde Park. It was offically opened on 6 July 2004 by Queen Elizabeth II.
