When We Are Closed
When the surgery is closed contact NHS 111 service.
Night and weekend calls are dealt with by the NHS 111 service.
Please do not ask to see a doctor out of hours unless you genuinely cannot wait until the surgery
re-opens.
NHS Direct
The NHS provides a nurse led scheme which can be contacted at any time on 08454 24 24 24 or
online at www.nhs24.com This is a valuable source of advice and assistance particularly for
emergencies when the surgery may be closed.
Call 999 in an emergency. Chest pains and / or shortness of breath constitute an
emergency.
Appointments
All surgeries are by appointment and appointments are available each day although some will be
pre-booked.
Urgent cases will be seen the same day.
If you are unable to attend your appointment please let us know as soon as possible, this allows
the appointment to be offered to someone else who may need it.
The Practice can lose a number of appointments due to failure of attendance or cancellation.
Patients who fail to attend and do not notify the Practice are at risk of being removed from our
list.
If you arrive to see a doctor without an appointment you may not be able to see a doctor unless it
is an emergency.
If you arrive late for an appointment it may not always be possible to fit you in and an alternative
appointment may be offered.
Home Visits
If you are too ill to attend the surgery, a Home Visit can be arranged by telephone.
Please try to phone before 10.00 am. When you call to request a home visit the reception staff
will initially ask you some details to allow us to record the relevant information.
The Doctor may telephone you prior to the home visit to discuss your condition.
Telephone Consultations
The surgery is able to offer pre bookable and on the day telephone consultations. Please contact
the surgery for further details if you require to speak with the Doctor or Practice Nurse.
Late Surgery Appointments
The Practice provides an additional late surgery outwith our core opening times each week.
Please contact the surgery if you would like to arrange an appointment for our late surgery.
Repeat Prescriptions
If you are taking regular medication we will give you a computer slip listing your medication.
When you next require a prescription, hand in your slip at reception or pharmacy. You can
also phone the surgery with the items you require or order your medications online.
Alternatively send your prescription with a stamped addressed envelope to the surgery and we
will post your prescription to you.
Please give the practice a minimum of 48 hours notice prior to collecting your repeat
prescription.
The Doctor will request that you attend for an appointment before prescribing medication for the
first time or where a course of medication has expired or requires review.
Prescriptions Charges and Exemptions
Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying
charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs).
The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought
it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription
prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.
Please allow 48 hours, excluding weekends and Bank Holidays, for your request to be processed.
Any problems please telephone the surgery.

Scottish Bowel Screening Programme
Scottish Bowel Screening Programme
Bowel cancer is the third most common cancer in Scotland after breast and lung cancer.
Every year approximately 4000 people are newly diagnosed with the condition. 1 in
every 18 men over the age of a 50 will develop bowel cancer, whilst 1 in every 22
women over the age of 50 are at risk.
The following symptoms may be present in bowel cancer (and other conditions), however should warrant
further investigation by making an appointment with one of the GP’s:
 Bleeding from your bottom or blood in your bowel motions.
 A change in the consistency of your bowel motions for over 6 weeks.
 Abdominal pains.
 Weight loss when not trying.
 Increasing tiredness, looking paler than usual.
The Scottish Bowel Screening Programme has been developed to increase the number of people who
can be diagnosed at an early stage. The earlier bowel cancer is detected the more successful treatment
will be. All men and women between the ages of 50 and 74 will be invited to participate in screening. A
letter will be sent to your home soon after your 50th birthday and then every two years until you are 75.
Screening is performed by a test that detects blood in your bowel motions (poo) that may not be visible to
the eye. A testing kit will be sent to your home with instructions of how to use it. It should then be returned
in the Freepost envelope included in the pack. You should receive the results of this test in two weeks.
Most people’s tests will be negative; however should the test detect blood in your bowel motions, further
investigations will be organised as an outpatient for you.
No screening test is 100% effective so even if you have a negative screening test please do not ignore
the above symptoms and seek advice from one of our GP’s.
If you have lost your kit, wonder if you may be eligible
for screening or wish further information please
contact the
Scottish Bowel Screening Helpline: 0800 0121 833.
