ROLE DESCRIPTION Post: Communications Officer Reports to: Marketing and Communications Manager Accountable to: Head of Marketing and Communications Job purpose: 1. 2. To support management of SCIE’s presence at external events and exhibitons and SCIE’s own events. To support on media, public affairs, marketing and internal communication. Main duties: 1. To support SCIE’s presence at external events and exhibitons including researching external events, managing exhibition and event logistics, writing copy for the web and event publicity, promoting SCIE at exhibitions, and event administration. 2. To support SCIE’s own events programme by project managing events directly and/or providing advice on events management to other teams. Includes preparing materials, venue and speaker liaison, on-site management, evaluation, exhibition management and event administration. 3. To support internal communications by regularly updating news and communications section on SCIE’s intranet, and developing ideas for improvements. 4. To support press and public affairs work by: monitoring press and parliamentary activities using a range of databases and sources; draftign copy for SCIE’s website, media releases and articles when required. 5. To support SCIE's marketing activities, including researching stakeholders as required. 6. To ensure that all materials are prepared in accordance with the SCIE brand and housestyle. 7. To provide general administrative support to the communications team as required. 8. Other tasks as may be required, commensurate with the level of the post General duties: 1. PERSON SPECIFICATION ESSENTIAL CRITERIA Aptitude / Abilities / Skills Excellent verbal communication skills, ability to converse effectively with a variety of people from a broad range of backgrounds Ability to work effectively within a team, to build and maintain effective working relationships Excellent eye for detail, with a methodical approach to work Ability to work flexibly regarding type of workload and time (early starts/late finishes/overnight stays/travel throughout UK) Education / Knowledge Good general standard of education to degree level or equivalent experience Sound working knowledge of current windows-based software packages, and searching the internet Understanding of accessibility issues and implications for event management Experience At least 1 year’s experience of successfully organising events Experience of effective project management, including working to deadlines whilst coping with competing priorities Experience of writing clear and accurate copy Experience of collecting, analysing and presenting report findings (eg event evaluation) Experience of providing effective administrative support Attitudes / Personal Characteristics Politically astute, with an interest in learning about public sector/social care developments and how they relate to SCIE Proactive and positive approach to work Ability to work on own initiative with a minimum of supervision A clear understanding of, and commitment to, equal opportunities and diversity, and the commitment to promote high standards of conduct, integrity and probity DESIRABLE CRITERIA Education/Knowledge Communications or marketing related qualification Experience Experience of social care/public/voluntary sector Press office, marketing or public affairs experience Experience of managing fully accessible events.
