Pentecost Sunday
Today we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit,
the birth of the Church and the beginning of its
mission in the world. Pentecost Sunday
reminds us that or lives are filled with the Holy
Spirit and God has accomplished creative
things in us through this gift. We have been
entrusted with this great gift of the Holy Spirit.
Now is a good time to ask: Are we being good
stewards of this gift? What creative things have
we done to glorify God’s accomplishments in
us.
We would like to welcome all visitors and new
members to our Parish today. Registration papers
are on the bulletin board.

What is Pentecost?
Pentecost Sunday comes 50 days after Easter
Sunday, hence its name. The Greek word for 50 is
Pentecost. It is one of the most ancient feasts of the
Church and is mentioned in the Acts of the
Apostles (20:16) and St. Paul’s First Letter to the
Corinthians (16:8). It is the day the church was
born. On this day the disciples of Jesus were
gathering when “Suddenly a sound like the blowing
of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the
whole house where they were sitting. They saw
what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated
and came to rest on each of them. All of them were
filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in
other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” (Acts
2:2-4) They were granted the “gifts of the Holy
Spirit.” Those gifts helped them to fulfill their
mission to preach the Gospel to all nations. For us,
too, those gifts granted when we are infused with
sanctifying grace, the life of God in our souls—help
us to live a Christian life.
The Seven Gifts of the Holy Spirit are wisdom,
Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge,
Piety, and Fear of the Lord.
After Christ’s Ascension into Heaven the Apostles
knew the He had promised to send His spirit, but
they did not know exactly what that would mean.
Granted the gifts of the Spirit at Pentecost,
however, they were emboldened to speak the Good
News to all men. On that first Pentecost Sunday,
over 3,000 people were converted and baptized.
The example of the Apostles shows that the Gifts of
the Holy Spirit leads to the fruits of the Holy
Spirit—works that we can only perform through the
ascension of the Holy Spirit.
Pentecost points forward toward new beginnings,
for it’s when Christians celebrate the coming of the
Holy Spirit and the new horizons this opens up. It is
an invitation to dream. When a community of faith
quits dreaming, it has little to offer to its members
or to the world.

Brainstorming meeting Sunday, June 7, at
6:00pm in the MPB to discuss ways to reach out to
members that are no longer attending, people of the
community that are interested in the Catholic
Church and just some PR about our church. Anyone
that has something to offer to the mission of
reaching out for the church are invited to come.
Let’s get some good ideas going. “Go, therefore,
and make disciples of all nations…teaching them to
observe all that I have commanded you.” Matthew
28:19-20

Feb. 2, 2016. Religious life ought to promote
growth in the church by way of attraction. The
church must be attractive. Wake up the world! Be
witnesses of a different way of doing things, of
acting, of living!...It is this witness that I expect of
you. Religious should be men and women who are
able to wake the world up!
