UNIT 1: Expanded Zones of Exchange + Encounter, 500-1000
Timeline Project
In this project, we, as a class, will design & construct a global timeline reflecting world
history from 500 to 1000. The contents will come from 5 different geographical regions
and 5 over-arching themes of history. The timeline will provide a visual representation of
events, people, and ideas that shaped world history at this time.
Procedure:







You will be grouped according to geographical location
Once in groups, members will decide AS A GROUP on what symbol and color
will represent them on the timeline
Within each group, members will then decide who will research which topic
Once topics are assigned, students will begin research ON THEIR OWN (no
library time will be allotted for this project) I will be after school for help (unless
I’m in Japan)
Each student will choose 3 significant events, people, & ideas that were
significant to both their geographical location and their topic
Student should research these significant events, people, ideas, etc.. For each one
chosen, student should provide 1/2 page written summary & image that best
captures chosen event, person, etc.
These will be mounted on colored paper (according to geographic locations) and
organized on a timeline in the room
Geographic Locations:
1. Americas-includes both North and South America
2. East Asia-includes China, Japan, SE Asia, Indonesia, and Australia
3. Middle East & Central Asia-includes present day Middle East (excluding Egypt),
India, Bhutan, Nepal, and Myanmar
4. Africa-entire continent (including Egypt)
5. Europe- Western and Eastern

Thematic Topics:
1. Power & Politics- includes leaders, types of governments-acquisition and
retaining of power; which leaders were significant & why?
2. War & Peace-various wars and their causes & consequences—which were most
significant to world history & why? How did they change the world?
3. Society & Culture-how did the people live? How were peoples grouped/class
structures? What was the dominant culture? What achievements in the arts?
4. Science & Technology-what were latest inventions? How did they change the
world? New discoveries & their significance?
5. Religions, Beliefs, and Ideas-what was dominant belief system? How did it affect
society’s behavior? What ideas were prevalent in this time? What did people
believe & why?
Grading:
This project will be graded on the following criteria:
 Historical Accuracy
 Depth of synopsis
 Mechanical
 Aesthetic value
