NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR 2009 NEW DRUGS ON THE HORIZON
Drs. Steve Davidsen (Abbott Laboratories) and Emma Lees (Schering-Plough Biopharma) have again
agreed to serve as Co-Chairs for the Drugs on the Horizon Special Session at the AACR Annual
Meeting 2009. If your organization has a nomination for a development compound/target for the 2009
symposium, please contact Dr. Davidsen at steve.k.davidsen@abbott.com. As a reminder, the
symposium is geared toward the first disclosure of the chemistry and biology of new drug candidates
which are either nearing clinical development or have entered clinical trials. All participants must agree
to the disclosure of the chemical structure of the development compound. We look forward to your
nominations.
AACR HENRY SHEPARD BLADDER CANCER RESEARCH GRANTS
The 2008 AACR Henry Shepard Bladder Cancer Research Grants represent a joint effort of the Henry
H. Shepard Trust and the American Association for Cancer Research.
These two-year Grants will provide up to $250,000 in total support for innovative cancer research
projects designed to accelerate the discovery, development, and application of new agents to treat
bladder cancer and/or for pre-clinical research with direct therapeutic intent.
There are four grants available, and the application deadline is on Friday, July 25, 2008 at 12:00 noon,
U.S. Eastern Time. Please submit your applications online via proposalCENTRAL. For more
information on program guidelines and application instructions, please click here.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Chemical Insights into Biological Processes
August 15-16, 2008, Hood College, Frederick, Maryland
In conjunction with the launch of the Center for Cancer Research's Molecular Discovery Program and
the new Chemical Biology Laboratory, the Center for Cancer Research is hosting a Symposium,
entitled "Chemical Insights into Biological Processes." This Symposium will be a two-day event
focused on emerging and state-of-the-art chemistry approaches to difficult biological problems, with
special emphasis on cancer and HIV/AIDS. Registration is free, however pre-registration is required.
The deadline for abstract submissions is Tuesday, July 1, and the registration deadline is Friday,
August 1. For more information, please visit the Symposium website.
Chemical and Biological Aspects of Inflammation and Cancer
October 14-17, 2008, Ko Olina, Oahu, Hawaii
Molecular Targets and Cancer Therapeutics
October 21-24, 2008, Geneva Palexpo, Geneva, Switzerland
This symposium, hosted by EORTC, NCI and AACR, will bring together academics and scientists and
representatives from the pharmaceutical industry to discuss innovation in drug development, target
selection and the impact of new discoveries in molecular and cell biology. Understanding the pathways
and mechanisms which cause cancer and regulate the biological behavior of tumor cells has lead to
the development of numerous new agents and innovative targets for clinical trials. This conference has
been organized to reflect the many recent advances in the early development of promising new
compounds, which are in different levels of preclinical and clinical development. It will bring together
delegates from all over the world igniting a huge exchange of information and promoting and
developing global partnerships in translational research. The conference has been developed to
ensure the maximum amount of interaction and discussion. For more information, please visit the 2008
Symposium website.
Targeting the PI3-Kinase Pathway in Cancer
November 11-14, 2008, Cambridge, Massachusetts
Tumor Immunology: New Perspectives
December 2-5, 2008, Miami, Florida
Infection and Cancer: Biology, Therapeutics, and Prevention
December 5-7, 2008, Hong Kong SAR, China
Chemistry in Cancer Research: A Vital Partnership in Cancer Drug Discovery and
Development
A joint meeting between the AACR and the American Chemical Society
February 8-11, 2009, Westin Canal Place, New Orleans, Louisiana
This conference was first presented in 2007 to address the importance of chemistry in cancer
research. It was highly successful and featured lectures several key chemically oriented areas of
cancer research.
The next conference will continue to address the role of chemistry in cancer research, but will focus
most specifically on cancer drug development. Topics will include target identification and validation,
chemical libraries, chemoinformatics, drug targeting, and drug delivery, among others.
The inclusion of short presentations from abstracts submitted by younger investigators is an essential
part of the program, in order to energize younger chemical investigators and inform them of the many
opportunities to apply the power of chemistry to important problems in cancer research.
Please check the CICR website for further details as they become available.
