Note 1: The accuracy of any ancestral traces is only
as good the data available.
Note 2: The number of ancestors (tracing only
parent to parent) doubles every generation. If you
go back 10 generations (8th great grand-parents)
there are 1,024, go back 20 generations (18th great
grand-parents) there are 1,048,576, go back 30
generations (28th great grand-parents) there are
1,073,741,824, go back 40 generations (38th great
grand-parents there are 1,099,511,627,776. It is
said that if you are of European descent that you
are probably descended from Charlemagne, if you
compare the numbers above to the number of
people living in Europe in the 700’s it is obvious
that this statement is probably true. The challenge
is to be able to trace your family tree back to
Charlemagne. As of July 2012 the US Census Bureau
estimates the current world population to be
7,000,000,000+.

The below is based on a genealogy of the Hawkes family that I
received from my uncle Raymond Ford. I have updated it to
contain more recent data.
Adam Hawkes born in England about 1608 died in Saugus, Mass. 1/13/1671. He
married first Mrs. Ann (Brown) Hutchinson, who died 10/4/1669, and Adam
married Sarah Hooper, daughter or William of Reading, Mass., June 1670.
Adam’s widow Sarah married Samuel Wardle (last name is probably Wardwell),
1/9/1672 in Andover, Mass. Samuel was executed as a witch 9/22/1692, and
Sarah was also tried and condemned and held prisoner for a long time, but was
freed at the time of the general delivery.
The family tradition is that Adam paddled down the Saugus River to the large
grant of land given him by the English King, from Charleston, Mass, where he had
been living several years, and where Ann had been admitted to the church. He
built a log cabin which burned sometime after, and Adam went across the road
and built another.
Adam left a will, in which he divided his property between his three children, his
grandson Moses, and the four sons and daughters of his first wife, and his second
wife. The records aren’t exactly clear as to how many children Adam had, but at
least three are known. Through his daughter Susanna, Adam became the ancestor
of a number of distinguished men, such as Oliver Wendell Holmes, Philips Brooks,
and John Adams, President of the United States.

4/3/1658. He married second Sarah Cushman 4/11/1661.
Susannah, twin, born 1633 married William Cogswell 1650.

Sarah, born 6/1/1671, married Francis Johnson 2/1/1693 at Andover.
John Hawkes, son of Adam and Ann, married Rebecca Maverick 4/3/1658.
Rebecca was the daughter of Moses and Remember (Allerton) Maverick, and it is
through the father of Remember, Isaac Allerton, that all descendants of John
Hawkes have a Mayflower line. Rebecca died 11/4/1659 and 4/11/1661 John
married Sarah Cushman, daughter of Thomas and Mary (Allerton) Cushman.
Mary was another daughter of Isaac Allerton.

Mrs. Sarah Bassett Newhall married Ruth (Philips) Graves.
Ebenezer Hawkes son of John and Sarah (Cushman) Hawkes, born 1676, died
12/9/1766. Married first Elizabeth Cogswell 6/16/1701, daughter of John and
Margaret (Gifford) Cogswell, born 8/1/1677 and died 6/16/1718. He married
second Sarah (Bassett) Newhall 5/13/1719, daughter of William and Sarah (Hood)
Bassett born 12/5/1676 and died 3/27/1732. Ebenezer married third Ruth
(Philips) Graves 11/9/1732 of Boston born 1686 and died 1/15/1670. Ebenezer
was a blacksmith and storekeeper; he owned land in Marblehead where he
settled and also in Windham, Maine. It was his grandsons who removed to
Windham, along with other residents of Marblehead, and became settlers, and
from whom most of the Maine Hawkes are descended. I do not feel that we have
a complete list of Ebenezer’s children, but in his will only three are mentioned.

Samuel born 5/12/1706, died 1772, married Philadelphia Estes 1727.
Samuel Hawkes son of Ebenezer and Elizabeth (Cogswell) Hawkes, born
5/12/1706, died 1772. Married Philadelphia Estes 4/28/1727, daughter of John
and Hanna (Bassett) Estes, who were Quakers. Philadelphia’s brother William was
grandfather to Lydia Estes who married Isaac Pinkham and became founder of the
Lydia Pinkham Company. I have been told that Philadelphia was a Quaker
preacher, which may account for the queerness of this line. Something is wrong,
which I cannot account for. It was a set rule that children always named their first
son for their father, the first daughter was named for either father’s mother or
the wife’s, and while Samuel had a daughter Philadelphia, it is not carried out in
any of his children’s lines. Philadelphia apparently died about 1740, as the

younger children’s births occur so much later that he must have married a second
time of which we have no record.

Samuel birth unknown died 1756. Left a will in which he left to his sister
Philadelphia all his “Indoor Household movables together with 13 pound
6:8 pieces Lawful money”. Also mentions his sister Hannah and his brother
John.
Philadelphia birth unknown died 10/13/1787 recently found in an
unpublished Quaker diary, kept by Mrs. Pratt.
John born 1736 married Jerusha Merriam 12/7/1761.
Ebenezer birth unknown died 8/21/1791 married Rebecca Alley 1765.
Hanna birth unknown died 10/13/1756.
Matthew born 1753 married Ruth Breed 1774 married Ruth Collins 1778.
Deliverance born 10/23/1753 died 2/26/1825.
Joseph born 3/2/1754 probably married Mary Burrill 2/29/1774.
Patience born 1/25/1755 died 11/29/1838
Sarah alive in 1766.
John Hawkes son of Samuel and Philadelphia (Estes) Hawkes born 1736 was
alive in 1825 mentioned in son’s will, married Jerusha Merriam 12/7/1761
supposed to be the daughter of Theophilus and Abigail (Ramsell) Merriam, but as
she has no child by either name I think it is an error, especially so as the above
named Merriam’s lived in Concord, Mass. and in the death record of Jerusha’s

daughter Esther Shillaber, she gives her mother’s birth place as Walpole. Her
death record has never been found either. John was a cordwainer or
leatherworker.

Charles Warren Hawkes son of David and Hanna (Pratt) Hawkes born 1821
married Hannah Pickering 1842. Charles Warren Hawkes left here in 1849 to go
seek his fortune in the Gold Rush of 1849. He was with an organized party of men.
He got as far as Delnot, Colorado and struck it rich. He kept several parchment
diaries as he traveled over the miles. When he returned to Boston, he visited his
daughter Sarah Helen. He brought back gold beads, a gold lover’s knot pin and
other jewelry. He hired a suite of rooms at a Boston hotel as he claimed he was
used to space and couldn’t be comfortable in a room at his daughter’s home. He
also asked the hotel to get a goat as he was used to goat’s milk.
Children of Charles Warren Hawkes and Hannah (Pickering) Hawkes:
Sarah Helen born Lynn, Mass. 1843 married George Edmond Jackson born
1838 married 1860 son of William P. and Emiline B. of Boston. Sarah died
1865 George died 5/8/1918.
Francis born 1844 married George E. Jackson 1866.
Laura born 8/../1847 died 1869.
Lydia Loring born 1848 died 1850.
George Edmond Jackson enlisted 4/16/1861 at the age of 23. Was in “K” 31st
Regiment Mass. Vol. Infantry promoted to 1st St. later promoted to 1st Lt. and
muster as such 9/6/1864, mustered out 11/26/1864 (this information is from The
Adjutant General). His wife Sarah Helen (Hawkes) Jackson died while he was
away; he then married her sister Francis in 1866.

Harriet Helen Ford born 10/5/1921, died 5/21/1979. At the time of Frederick
Schaffner death in 2008 there were four children, seven grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren; who are not listed as they are all still living.
Frederick Schaffner was the son of Ernest Stanley Schaffner and Catherine
Frances Murphy (also seen listed as Mary Catherine Fogerty). Her birth name
was Mary Catherine Fogerty. She was adopted by her aunt and uncle, John and
Margaret Murphy, her name was changed to Catherine Frances Murphy. I had her
adopted mother listed as Margaret O’Rielly, from her marriage information it is
listed as Margaret Donlearey. Also have seen some indication her birth parents
might have been John Fogerty and Bridget Ryan. A certified copy of her death
transcript lists her parents as John P. Murphy (adopted father?) and Bridget (birth
mother?).

New England to Nova Scotia migration in the 1760’s
I have seen that several of our ancestors on the Schaffner side of the family
relocated from New England to Nova Scotia in the 1700’s I had thought perhaps
they were “Loyalist” however the below story shows that they were most likely
part of a migration to Canada. Family names that are shown as being born in New
England and dying in Nova Scotia: Allen, Baker, Balcom, Benjamin, Bishop,
Bradish, Brigham, Bullard, Church, Copp, Godfrey, Hamilton, Hardy, Hurd, Morse,
Parker, Saunders, West, Whitman, Woodbury.
"1760 - 'New London, Connecticut and vicinity contributed liberally to the flood of
migration into Nova Scotia, which set in shortly after the expulsion of the
Acadians in 1755. The Government encouraged New Englanders to occupy the
lands left vacant by the deportation of the French population (to Louisiana). In
1759 after the fall of Quebec, a committee of five prominent citizens was sent to
inspect the Acadian country. One of these was Major Robert DENISON. The
committee reported favorably, and in a short time more that 6,000 people left
New England, bound for the new 'promised land' of Nova Scotia. Among these
were Samuel COPP (1704-ca.1774) and his brother John COPP (sons of Jonathan
and Catherine (LAY) COPP), and Major DENISON himself, who despite his more
than three score years did not hesitate to follow the course he had recommended
to his neighbors. Samuel COPP and John COPP received patents or grants of about
700 acres each in the Township of Horton, Kings County, N.S. This county lay in
the heart of the Acadian country and had been almost completely depopulated by
the removal of the French inhabitants. In Horton was located the village of Grand
Pre', immortalized in Longfellow's EVANGELINE. Another one of its villages,
'Horton Corner,' is now Kentville, the county seat. Samuel and John COPP arrived

The Jaffrey Connection Part 1
I have found that two sons of Bazaleel Bennett born about 1750 died 1821 and
Rachel Barnes born in 1755 married in 1774 were born in Jaffrey, New Hampshire,
David Bennett born 1780 and Briggs Bennett born 1782, I have found no further
information on either of them.
The information below can be found in “History of Jaffrey, New
Hampshire Volume II Genealogies” copyright 1937, on page 57.
Thomas1 Barnes had a grant of land in Hingham, Massachusetts, in 1637. He was a
“farmer” and “weaver”; married Anna surname unknown, who died 5 April 1691.
He died 29 November 1672.
Peter2 Barnes born Hingham, Massachusetts, 6 June 1652: married first July 1679
Anna daughter of Cornelius and Anna Canterbury; she died 20 December 1729.
Married second 4 August 1739 Mrs. Lydia (Vinton) Turner, widow of Jonathan
Turner and perhaps widow of Blaze Vinton.
John3 Barnes born 10 December 1685; married 5 August 1715 Elizabeth daughter
of Blaze Vinton. She died 11 February 1772; he died 25 April 1760.
Benjamin4 Barnes born 6 July 1726 he married first 29 October 1746 Hannah born
20 August 1727 daughter of Andrew and Rachel (Bates) Beal. Children: (1)
Benjamin, (2) Canterbury, (3) Lucy married Elias Whitney Jr., (4) Rachel, (5) Rachel
born 1 January 1755; married 24 February 1774 Bazaleel Bennett, (6) Triphena,

He married second 29 September 1783 widow Ruth Loring who died 22

Massachusetts, 21 October 1764, Came to Jaffrey in young manhood and in June
1784, he was a member of the Jaffrey Training Band and was recorded as fifer. He
married in Jaffrey 11 January 1789 Betsy Trull, and probably soon after removed
to Vermont or Canada.
John5 Barnes (John4, John3, Peter2, Thomas1) born in Hingham, Massachusetts, 2
October 1749; married first 16 February 1772 Martha born in Hanover,
Massachusetts 11 December 1750 died 30 December 1780 daughter of William
and Martha (Mann) Curtis. Children: (1) Curtis born 14 July 1773, (2) Martha born
11 August 1775 died 28 April 1840, (3) Margaret born 8 February 1778 died 19
March 1814, (4) John born 13 July 1780 died February 1781. Married second 14
November 1782 Mary Nichols of Scituate, Massachusetts, she died in Hingham
Massachusetts 10 April 1821. Children: (1) Polly born 9 November 1783 died 30
December 1837, (2) John born 31 October 1785 died 22 March 1786. He died 9
February 1817. John and his wife Mary, sold 100 acres of land in Jaffrey and a pew
in the Jaffrey Meeting-house, to Benjamin Dole of Jaffrey in 1789. He acquired
this property in 1781, together with a dwelling house, a grist mill and saw mill and
other buildings

The Bailey Mills
The third saw mill in Jaffrey was evidently on the Mountain Stream in the section
now know as Mineral Spring Village, or Ballou City. Abraham Bailey, a millwright,
came from Tewksbury, Massachusetts, about 1773, and his work aside from
building a cabin for shelter was in building a saw and grist mill in the rear of his
dwelling on the site of the present Mountain Shade House of Bernard Caldwell &
Son. Here he sawed lumber for the meeting-house in 1774 and 1775, and for
other houses and barns in the vicinity. But building mills was more to his liking
than operating them and so in 1779 he sold a half interest in his mill to David

Beard of Wilmington, Massachusetts, and removed to Reading, Vermont, where
he built with his brother-in-law, George Betterly, the first mill in that place. In
1781 he sold the remaining interest in his Jaffrey mill to John Barnes of Hingham,
Massachusetts, who soon after also acquired the former Beard interest from
Bazaleel Bennett of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts. In1789 the mill ownership
passed to Benjamin Dole, together with a pew in the Meeting-house, a dwelling
house and other buildings.

The Jaffrey Connection Part 2
The information below can be found in “History of Jaffrey, New
Hampshire Volume II Genealogies” copyright 1937, on page 718.
John Spofford, who came from Yorkshire, England, in 1638, in the company of
Rev. Ezekiel Rogers, was the ancestor of all of the Spoffords and Spaffords in
America. The company obtained a grant on what is now known as the North
Shore of Massachusetts Bay, extending from the seashore to Cochichawuk, now
Andover, a territory from which came a large portion of the early settlers of
Jaffrey. His name appears on the record of the first division of lands into
homestead lots in 1643, on Bradford Street, near the center of the present town
of Rowley. He married Elizabeth daughter of Thomas Scott of Ipswich,
Massachusetts. He lived for about thirty years in what is now Rowley, and in 1669
removed to “Spofford”s Hill” in the west part of the town and became the first
settler in the section later known as Georgetown. Among his descendants are said
to be not only all the Spoffords, but also most of the Kimballs, Hopkinsons,
Parkers, Peabodys, Woods and Adamses, all prominent names in the settlement
of Jaffrey and Rindge. He acquired a good share of wealth for the times, he died
Rowley in 1678 aged sixty-six. Children: (1) Elizabeth born 1646, (2) John born
1648, (3) Thomas born 1650, (4) Samuel born 1653, (5) Hannah born 1655, (6)
Mary born 1656, (7) Sarah born 1658 died in infancy, (8) Sarah born 1662 married

The below story is about Mary Norris wife of Isaac Allerton:
Mary and Isaac were among the Pilgrims to flee England to Leiden, Holland for
religious reasons. They married there in 1611 and she was given the unoffical title
of "Maid of Newberry" while living in Holland. In 1622, Mary and Isaac embarked
on the Mayflower with 102 passengers, including three pregnant women. Mary

Bartholomew Gosnold is not a direct ancestor. His father Anthony
Gosnold was the brother of our ancestor John Gosnell. In 1602
Bartholomew explored the coast of New England (Cape Elizabeth and
York Harbor in Maine, Cape Cod and Marthas Vineyard in
Massachusetts). In 1607 Bartholomew and his brother Anthony were
among the first settlers in Jamestown both died while in Jamestown.
