Electron Microscopy Student Research Award
Terms and Conditions
Otago Centre for Electron Microscopy
Purpose:
This award is intended to advance the initiation of new research projects that utilise electron
microscopy, and thereby:



Promote utilization of available electron microscopy capabilities.
Advance research projects that can attract external funding.
Establish and implement novel approaches and techniques that utilise electron microscopy.
Entitlement of the award:
The award allows utilisation of equipment (excluding consumables) at the Otago Centre for Electron
Microscopy for up to 15 hours electron microscope time (high-voltage time).
The award must be used within a year after initiation. Awarded hours will not be counted in
calculating OCEM club fees for departments.
Eligibility:
All undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled at the University of Otago during the time of
utilising the award are entitled to apply. The student must have the support of a supervisor located
within the University of Otago. The supervisor is expected to make arrangements to cover the cost of
consumables associated with the award. The award should support new research projects and not
supplement funded research projects
Number of available awards:
Two awards per year will be available.
Selection criteria:
(1)
The applicant's academic record.
(2)
Quality of the proposed research.
(3)
Feasibility of executing the proposed research project utilising equipment at the Otago Centre for
Electron Microscopy.
Application procedure:
Applications consist of a completed application form that includes the signatures of the applicant and
their Supervisor. Applications close April 1 and September 1 each year.
Applications are to be submitted to Allan Mitchell, Manager of the Otago Centre for Electron
Microscopy, Room: B10 Lindo Ferguson Building.

Two members of the OCEM User Group and two members of the OCEM Management Committee
will judge the applications. Applicants will be informed by email about the outcome.
Responsibilities of awardees:
Students that have been awarded OCEM Student Research Award are expected to utilise the allotted
resources efficiently towards the objectives outlined in the proposal.
It is expected that the outcome generated through this Award will be presented at the annual Otago
Electron Microscopy Research Meeting (pending a proposal to be submitted by the OCEM User
Group to OCEM Management Committee).
Publications resulting from work utilising the OCEM Student Research Award should acknowledge
support by the OECM Student research award.
