Part A: Joining Sentences (1 mark per sentence) /6

For each of the following questions:

Join the two sentences into one using the connectors in parentheses ( ).

Write one sentence for each connector, for a total of 6 sentences.

Make sure the new sentence is a full sentence.

Make sure the new sentence has a similar meaning to the original sentences.

Note: It is okay to change the order of the clauses.

1. Brian didn’t really know how to fly a plane. As a result, he struggled to land the plane when the pilot died.

 You don’t need to re-write the sentence.

Note: You may not just use a period (.) to correct the sentences.

2. Since that day in the parking lot, Brian had kept the Secret to himself, there was nobody that he could tell.

3. Leaving his house in New York with his mother on the way to visit his dad.

There are often several acceptable ways to correct the problems.

Brian was finally on his way to see his dad he boarded the small Cessna, but nothing could have prepared him for what was about to happen. One minute, the pilot was teaching him how to fly the plane, the next minute, he was sitting beside a dead pilot! Brian needed to land the plane or prepare for a crash. When the plane crashed; Brian found himself in water. He knew that he had to swim to the top before his lungs ran out of air. Brian, feeling exhausted, pulled himself onto dry land. He was tired, and his legs hurt. All of his dreams about spending time with his father had just come to a sudden stop. Now, all of his thoughts about staying alive and getting rescued.

More than 3 (or more) clauses:

If a sentence has more than 3 clauses and one of them has an error, student can still get 1 mark if the other two are used correctly.
