Pennsbury Music Theory Courses 0818 Foundations of Music No prerequisite An introductory, academic course to music theory, this course is designed for the student desiring basic instruction in music theory. Topics presented include reading music in several clefs, scales, key signatures, triads, seventh chords, diatonic triads and seventh chords, chord progressions, basic harmonization, sight-singing, development of aural skills and rhythm work. An introduction to the four periods of music history and the analysis of various musical elements will be included. Students will also compose several pieces in a variety of musical styles. 0812 Music Theory I Prerequisite: Foundations of Music or teacher approval after a thorough written, aural, and vocal examination. Designed for the student who has intermediate skills/knowledge and a special interest in music. This course provides instruction in music theory, composition, solfege & sight-singing, aural skills, fundamental conducting skills, orchestration, musical analysis of compositional elements, score reading, traditional part-writing, harmonization, and additional study in music history. 0813 Music Theory II Prerequisite: Music Theory I This course extends the content and experiences of Music Theory I for the serious music student, a student who has demonstrated talent and interest in pursuing the study of advanced music theory and is considering music or a music related field as a career. Composition, solfege & sight-singing, conducting skills, orchestration, aural & written analysis skills, part-writing, harmonization, and work in music history will be at a significantly more advanced level. The Music Theory II class, as a culminating project, creates an original musical, which is presented to the Pennsbury community at the end of the semester. 0814 AP Music Theory III Prerequisite: Music Theory II This course is designed for the student who plans to pursue music as a career. Course content may be tailored to the needs of the individual student in consultation with the instructor. Possible topics for study include advanced traditional composition, a practical experience in music education, computers and music, orchestration, 20th century theory and composition, a possible conducting experience with a Pennsbury instrumental or choral ensemble, thorough knowledge and additional study in music history and preparation for the Advanced Placement Music Theory Examination. Students in AP Music Theory III are eligible to participate in our innovative Music Mentors Program. This Program gives our advanced music theory students the opportunity to work side by side with experienced Pennsbury music teachers, observing lessons, participating in classroom experiences, and with supervision, teaching several mini-lessons. ***** In addition, students will work with various computer notation programs and computer assisted instruction programs at all levels of our theory program. ***** Questions concerning the Pennsbury Music Theory Program?
