NURS 128 Perinatal Nursing

NURS 128 Perinatal Nursing number of credits? Summer
6 hours lecture, 18 hours lab/clinical per week for 4 week
Prerequisite(s):
A grade of “C” or higher in NURS 101; a grade of “C” or higher in
NURS 120; a grade of “C” or higher in NURS 122; a grade of “C”
or higher in NURS 126; a grade of “C” or higher BIOL 130; and a
grade a “C” or higher in FAMR 230.
NURS 128 Perinatal Nursing focuses on the nursing theory and skills necessary for the care of
mothers and newborns from varied cultural backgrounds, during and after birth. Knowledge is
applied in client care situations in obstetrical settings.
COMMENTS: Comment: NURS 128 is offered in the summer only. NURS 128 may not be
audited; NURS 128 may not be taken for credit/no credit. Students must pass all math, theory, and
clinical components in order to pass the course.

COURSE OBJECTIVES/COMPETENCIES:
Upon successful completion of NURS 128, the student should be able to:

Apply knowledge and skills previously acquired from FAMR 230 and NURS 122 to
the care of the new mother and newborn.
Describe the scope and aims of maternity nursing.
Perform safe, culturally appropriate nursing care for the woman during the
antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum periods.
Perform safe nursing care for the newborn.
GENERAL EDUCATION AND RELATIONSHIP TO OTHER COURSES:
NURS 128 is a required course in the PRACN curriculum. It focuses on the application of nursing
care skills in the care of women during pregnancy and birth, and the care of the newborn. It builds
on the nursing knowledge and skills gained in NURS 120, NURS 101, and NURS 122, and on the
understanding of biological needs of humans gained in BIOL 130. An understanding of
developmental needs and appreciation of the changing role of the expanding family comes from
FAMR 230, Human Growth and Development.

Clinical:
The clinical component of the course is pass or non-pass. Student clinical
evaluations are based on midterm and final clinical evaluations. These evaluations are based on the
clinical objectives, preplanning, clinical performance, and written assignments. The student must
pass each clinical rotation in order to pass the theory portion of the course. ???
Math:
The student has
opportunities to pass a (singular) math exam with 100%
accuracy by the date indicated on the course syllabus. BEFORE the official withdrawal date?
Department calculators may be used. The student must receive 100% on each math test (plural?) in
order to pass the math portion of the course.
Grading Scale:
90 - 100% = A
80 - 89% = B
70 - 79% = C

less than 60% = F
Whatever method of evaluation is used, it is understood that the instructor reserves the right to
make necessary and reasonable adjustments to the evaluation policies outlined.

A.
This curriculum change is required for a 5 year cyclic review.

This is not an experimental course.

There are no changes in number of credits or required hours for this course.
RESOURCE REQUIREMENTS:

The source of funding remains unchanged. Since this is an update of the course,
there are no increases in staffing, supplies, or equipment needs.

This course does not impact any other departments.

Maximum enrollment per class section is 30. The estimated number of sections to be
offered per semester is one.
