The fourth annual Doris Duke Historic Preservation Awards were celebrated at Rough Point on September 10, 2010. Award winners included prominent Newport resident, Marion Oates Charles who received the distinguished steward award for her strong support of preservation in Newport, RI and Washington, DC.; James and Alice Ross received an award for their painstaking restoration of Berkeley House, a wonderful example of McKim, Mead & White design; and Channing Memorial Church received an award for the repair of its historic steeple and bells, which demonstrated excellent planning and community involvement. Each year, the proceeds from the Doris Duke Historic Preservation Awards celebration go into the grant fund to support further historic preservation in Newport. Small grants are given annually for bricks-and-mortar projects on Aquidneck Island or Jamestown. www.newportseen.com www.kirbyperkins.com Marion “Oatsie” Charles photo courtesy of Linda Phillips, Newport Seen http://www.newportrestoration.org/
