Dear Colleagues, MRC SUPREMO – a Phase III randomised trial to assess the role of adjuvant chest wall irradiation in intermediate risk breast cancer after mastectomy. Pathology QA Update The whole QA exercise has been co-ordinated with military efficiency by Tammy Piper in John Bartlett’s lab. It is well underway and the reviewing pathologists, Jeremy Thomas and Andy Hanby, are up to date as we go to press. So far 550 cases have been reviewed and there are a further 150 in the pipeline. We would like to keep on top of this task to ensure that we get an accurate as possible measure of our pathology data quality so please send us your blocks/slides promptly when asked. Tissue Block Collection Out of the 1113 patients recruited to date 876 have consented to donate tissue for Trans-Supremo. The lab in Edinburgh has received 717 of these samples to date. On the 27th of June the 600th sample was archived with the completion of the third set of tissue-micro arrays – some 84% of samples received. However this is only 68% of the samples for all Trans-Supremo patients. Please therefore continue to send any outstanding tissue samples to the laboratory. China Monitoring & Patient Follow Up HSBC Trustees has kindly awarded £68,140 from the Peter Chan Jee Yat Foundation and the Yeung Ying & May Yeung Foundation in April 2011. This will be used for the monitoring and follow up of patients in China for 10 years. As part of their contractual obligations China are to recruit a maximum of 60 patients. Currently they have recruited 58 patients so only need 2 more to reach their target. We would like to congratulate the research teams at the following site for randomising their first subject to the trial in June: Dr Diana Ritchie, Claudia Turley and Emma Moody from the Victoria ACH, Glasgow Dr Amandeep Dhaddam, Dr Afaf Elhag, Alison Ames, Sarah Kent, Anne Nunn, Tracey Hawkes & Damon Foster from Scarborough General Hospital Dr Rema Jyothirmayi, Dr Charlotte Abson, Dr Russell Burcombe, Dr Andrew Visioli, Dr Gillian Sadler, Pauline Wood, Rachel Ryan, Claire Ryan, Sandra Burt and Clare Calvert from the Kent Oncology Centre, Maidstone Hospital.
