BRIEF STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Paediatric Registrars are expected to manage outpatients and inpatients under the supervision of specialists.
Paediatric Registrars have a role in the teaching of Resident Medical Officers, nursing staff and medical
students and the more senior the registrar the higher the degree of involvement.
Registrars will be given three 4-month terms during their 12 month post and may gain experience in the
following areas: Emergency, Oncology, Neurosurgery/Neurology, Rehabilitation Medicine, Rural Paediatrics,
Rheumatology, Neonates, Cardiology, General Paediatrics - Medicine, Diabetes/Endocrine, Renal,
Immunology, Respiratory Medicine, Genetics, Dermatology and Gastroenterology.
These posts are accredited by the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.
The Registrar training programme may involve rotations in the 2 Neonatal Intensive Care units in WA being the
maternity unit at King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women and the paediatric unit at Princess Margaret
Hospital for Children.
The rotation in the maternity hospital will provide an opportunity for clinical experience in the diagnosis and
management of acute neonatal problems, especially those associated with immaturity. There will also be a
wealth of experience to give competence in delivery room resuscitation, ventilatory management of acute
respiratory diseases, continuous monitoring and nutritional support of the very preterm or very sick newborn.
In the paediatric hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit there will be exposure and involvement in the diagnosis
and management of a variety of neonatal disorders including a significant proportion with congenital anomalies
and in the post operative care of major neonatal surgical problems. Essentially all outborn infants who require
neonatal intensive care are transferred to the paediatric hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Paediatric
Registrars may be involved in the WA Neonatal Transport Service with transport of the sick newborn over long
distances in Western Australia frequently using the Royal Flying Doctor Service. There is also the potential of
involvement in transfer of cardiac patients to the Royal Children’s Hospital (Melbourne).
