CHAMPIONS ARE MADE, PRODUCERS ARE BORN

The story of Graaf Quirinus van Neerlands Stam

Article by J.M v.d. Zwan

Graaf Quirinus van Neerlands Stam, at 9 years n 15.09.1987 a remarkable litter was born in the "van Neerlands Stam" kennel. Remarkable because neither the dam nor the sire were carrying the blood of the old famous van

Neerlands Stam lines going back to the fourties to

Gravin Diana or Graaf Dagobert van Neerlands

Stam . Ms.V.Knijff-Dermout had bred for the last years so closely that I as her new partner in 1984 thought that it was right to buy a bitch out of a bloodline that had nothing to do with the "van

Neerlands Stam" lines. By doing this it was possible for us to bring new blood in our lines by mixing the blood of this new bitch with our bloodlines. I talked this over with the old lady and she agreed under the condition that the bitch would be out of a well known kennel and with more than excellent qualities. So I suggested to buy a female puppy out of the "von

Franckenhorst" kennel, the most influential kennel in Dobermann World in last 20 years. Right at that moment they had the so called "D" litter out of

Arrow v. Harro's Berg and Vivre Vivien v.

Frankenhors t, a combination which doubled up the excellent "V" litter of v. Franckenhorst.

Besides, in this combination we also found the magic triangle Odin v. Forell - Bryan v. Forell -

Chico v. Forell which worked wonders because it combined the elegance with the smooth and the rough. So I was convinced of the high quality of the litter and much more important of the strong hereditary powers of the litter (this was proved several years later by the influence of this litter on the Dobermann breed in Europe, U.S.A. and in

Japan through Dobermanns like Dara, Dolly, Dea

Dolores and Dexter v. Franckenhorst ).

Graaf Dagobert v.Neerlands Stam Arrow v.Harro's Berg Vivre Vivien v.Frankenhorst

Odin v.Forell Bryan v.Forell Chico v.Forell

Dea Dolores v. Franckenhorst

Dexter v.Franckenhorst rs. V.Knijff-

Dennout agreed with me and we visited Mr. S.David

Franquemont. Together with her we made our choice (we did not have the first but the second pick in the litter). Still I am very thankful to Mrs. S.David

Franquemont for letting me have such a wonderful puppy like Dea Dolores v.

Franckenhorst . A beautiful bitch which became an excellent show dog and later an excellent brood bitch as well but above all she became the one who polished the "van Neerlands

Stam" kennel and gave her a lift up in their breeding program. Dea became a famous bitch in the show world. She won the

European Sieger title, the

Bundessieger title and she got her International, Dutch and German Champion title.

She was a very armonious and pleasing bitch with much alertness and temperament. She passed her ZTP with the highest score and (passed her IPO

II exam with a very good

result) she was the bitch which whelped the "Q" litter of the "van Neerlands

Stam" kennel existing out of three black Dobermann pups: two males and one female, born on the 15th of

September 1987.

Hertog Alpha Le Dobry he sire of this litter was the famous stud dog

Hertog Alpha Le Dobry. He was the sire of many outstanding specimen and of numerous Champions and sieger Dogs. He was a significant force for the breed in all parts over

Europe and without any doubt he raised the mean level of the breed. So he certainly earned his place in the hall of fame. His hereditary powers were clear. He was strongly carrying the bloodlines of great producers like Don

Dayan v. Franckenhorst and Bryan v. Forell.

Besides, just like in Dea

Dolores v. Franckenhorst pedigree, we also find the same triangle with Odin v.

Forell - Bryan von Forell and Chico v. Forell in

Hertog Alpha's pedigree besides supplied with some

Forstenfeld blood out of the line of his dam Tanja v.d.

Kunnemabourgh. Although he won the Dutch Winner title in 1981 Hertog Alpha never won any important show title. But on the workingfield he got his best results. His temperament was excellent and he was a dog with very high fighting and protecting spirit combined with courage and hardness. He passed easily his Schutzhund III exam and won many working trails. In 1985 he passed the "Korung" with Class I A for life. It was this male which I choose to became the sire of my "Q" litter. The reason was not only because of his more than excellent offspring but above all I was convinced that his bloodlines would strengthen the lines of Dea Dolores v. Franckenhorst. It would give me pups which I could use for my ultimate goal: refreshing the old "v.

Neerlands Stam" lines by doubling up that triangle that brought so much success to the breed in the past. Now afterwards I can say it worked!

.

Quen da van

Neerl ands

Stam.

All three pups were very strong and tall. The bitch, Gravin Quenda, which I kept, was after three years mated to Graaf Igon van Neerlands Stam. The litter was reasonable but not what I had expected. After this she was sold to Finland. The two brothers gave me a problem, I really didn't know which I should choose. One of them would go to Mr. G.Moller the vice president of the German Dobermann

Verein and owner of the kennel "v.d. Rauberhohle". But which one? I told Mr.

Moller that as a breeder I had the first choice and he agreed. Mr. Moller was very attracted by Dea Dolores and the combination was also in his opinion very full of promise. He came to my place when the pups were 7 weeks old with the he name s of the three pups were

Graaf

Quint o,

Graaf

Quirin us and

Gravi n expectation that he could take one of the males with him. Unfortunately that was not possible while the pups were not tattooed yet. But I said to him that he could tell me his choice. He chose not the taller one but the smaller one with the stronger head and robust build. Also in temperament he thought that this one had more fighting spirit. I promised him that I would think it over and as soon as the ears were tattooed I would make up my mind and bring the puppy to him.

After some thinking and looking I decided to give Mr. G.Moller the one he chose.

But I never will forget the face of Mr. Moller and his wife when I brought the puppy to them at the "Korung" in the Autumn of 1987. The ears were not cropped properly (they were too short) the tail was too long and not healthy yet.

After a travel of 4 hours the puppy did not look very promising. But he walked around as a hero and had not any fear. The family Moller was soon conquered by the behavior of the puppy and took him home giving him the name Graaf

Quirinus van Neerlands Stam. By that time nobody realized that it was the beginning of a success story.

fter his first progeny debuted at the DV-Sieger Show in 1991 it was clear that his stud activities would increase. Untill 1994 he had more than 1280 descendants in about 183 litters, which means plus minus 7 puppies in each litter. Because of his genetic background Graaf Quirinus can only produce black and blue puppies. As far as I know he has produced till now about 50 blue puppies, the other descendants were all black. The blue color in his progeny appears mostly in combination with bitches which are carrying blood of Ali v. Langenhorst . His progeny proves that Graaf Quirinus certainly has given a contribution to raise the level of the Dobermann breed in the 90's.

Especially when it concerns the improve-ment of the croupe, the substance, the dark eyes and the strong underjaw.

Under his pro-geny we may find Group, Breed and Class winners, IDC, DV and Bundessiegers, National and

International Champions, European and World

Champions. t is an unanimous vote of confidence from breeders and judges when Graaf Quirinus' children are selected for key roles in breeding programs and from a variety of different lands are consistently rising to the top in show rings. Successful Graaf Quirinus progeny can be found everywhere in Europe, the USA, Russia and even in Australia. It is almost impossible to list the names of all his winning offspring but some of them I will mention just as an example of the wide spread influence of this male.

First I mention the DV-Sieger of 1995 and multi

Champion Gamon di Campovalano , who is also an

Italian Reproduction Champion. The Dutch bred Multi

Champion Judifax Fanthomas , who is a well respected

Dobermann stud in Belgium. The Youth Siegerin in 1993

Hannah Happy v. Heckendori , Irinus de Ferignis who is playing a key role in the development of the Russian

Dobermann breed. Nemesis Gadis , imported out of the

USA to Holland by the "van Neerlands Stam" kennel,

Youth Bundessiegerin 1994 and FCI European Siegerin

1995. The Youth World and DV Sieger 1995 Socrate du

Clos des Grognards . The American working champion

bitch Fallon v. Koepsel . And that's only a small selection of his progeny. Luckily most important Dobermann kennels in Europe have recognized the genetic force of Graaf Quirinus and used him to stud. So his genetic potential is widely founded in the modern Dobermann breed. Thanks to such as the Italian kennels Di Campovalano, Nobili Nati and di

Latiano, the Belgium kennels du Clos des Grognards, von Roveline and v. Donken, the French kennels des Landrys, van Rauberstolz and de Ferignis, the German kennels v. Hagenstolz, v. Preuss Garten and van Amtmannsgarten, the Dutch Kennels v.h. Wantij, v. Stevinhage and v.Neerlands Stam, the USA kennels Nemesis and v. Koepsel and all the other kennels I have not mentioned. t is clear that the influence of Graaf Quirinus v. Neerlands Stam is the continuation of the significance male line of Lump v. Hagenstolz -

Bordo v. Forstenfeld - Vello v. Forstenfeld - Bryan v. Forell - Don Dayan v. Franckenhorst - Hertog

Alpha Le Dobry . He can stand proudly amongst those truly great Dobermanns recorded in the history of the Dobermann breed. His brother Graaf Quinto van Neerlands Stam , which I kept with me for one and a half years was in his youth extremely successful. He won all the important youth titles at the European shows. In 1988 he became the youth

Bundessieger by defeating his litter brother Graaf

Quirinus. That year he was sold to Japan but not before he was used as stud in the "van Neerlands

Stam" kennel. That litter brought me the World

Champion Gravin Wanda v. Neerlands Stam . After a dispute between the Dutch and the German authorities concerning his HD-score I brought Graaf

Quinto after two years back to Europe. In record time he became a Dutch and a German VDH Champion.

After one year he returned to Japan to continue his stud activities but the dispute about his HD-score affected his use as a stud in Europe as well in Japan.

Unfortunately he died too soon in 1994 due to cancer.Meanwhile, Graaf Quirinus van Neerlands

Stam had also his success in the show. In 1988 he became the vice-youth Bundessieger. But his judge report was better than the Winner's in his class - his litter brother. Maybe that was already a sign of the great things which would come.

raaf Quirinus is not a very showy dog in the ring. Let alone the fact that his expression is damaged by the badly cropped ears, which make the head look coarser, he has so many other things to offer. Nobody ever doubted that this was a real male. The wonderful strong bones, his enormous deep chest, broad lions, wide thighs and heavy muscling. A dry strong dog with a short back with that typical tail always standing up. A sign of self confidence and strong nerves. Indeed he doesn't have the well shaped blunt wedged perfect

Dobermann head but he has an honest masculine head not been camouflaged by long cropped ears.

His head lines are parallel and he has above all a very powerful underjaw. The neck is strong and dry.

His character is open and free. The male is dominant and extremely stable, all time in balance.

He has an average protection and prey instinct. It is not too difficult for such a dog to pass his ZTP and his Schutzhund III exam. Graaf Quirinus is a

Dobermann with a special harmony of body and mind that never failed to enchant, impress and bedazzle the Dobermann lovers. He is a perfect breed ambassador. For everybody it was clear that such a male should soon win very important titles.

His break through came at the DV-Sieger Show in

1991. There he won his first important title under the German Doberman specialist F.Kugel. But maybe more important was that the youth titles for the black male and female went to Gamon and

Ginga di Campovalano, Graaf Quirinus' first winning children out of his first litter by Mali di

Campovalano. It was the Italian breeder

G.Prosperi, kennel " Di Campovalano ", who first recognized the strong hereditary power of Graaf Quirinus v.

Neerlands Stam. After winning the DV-Sieger title nobody could stop him. At the end of 1991 he won the Dutch

Winner title. In 1992 he won the Bundessieger title in Vierula (Austria). In 1992 Mr. Wiblishauser made him IDC

Sieger in Budapest (Ungam). In 1994 and 1995 he got the best breed group at the DV-Sieger Show and in the meanwhile he became an International, German, Austrian and VDH Champion.
