Provide a structure in which the program can operate.
Provide periodic correspondence to update the member and sponsor of the current program status.
Provide educational programming for members, parents, and sponsors.
Provide appropriate recognition for sponsors, breeds, and participants.
Make final selection and assignment of calves and 4-H / FFA participants living in Clark County.
Make or approve all final decisions for the program.

Raise a 2 - 4 month registered dairy heifer for a period of 17 - 18 months.
Follow the calf management suggestions of the 4-H leader, FFA advisor, and the sponsor.
Exhibit the animal at the Clark County Junior and Open Fair dairy class and one other show.
Breed the animal at approximately 15 months of age to a bull mutually agreed to by the member and
the sponsor.
Attend educational meeting(s), along with parents, that are called by the committee.
Sell the animal at a Holstein sale designated by the Steering Committee and split the sales proceeds
with the sponsor/breeder. If the participant chooses to purchase the animal 50% of proceeds will go
to the breeder. If the participant chooses to sell the animal to someone else, including the breeder,
proceeds will be split 60% breeder / 40% participant.
Pick the calf up in an appropriate vehicle when the animals are made available by the committee.
Accept the decision of the committee in case of death, permanent disability, failure to breed, or
neglect, or failure to meet the terms of this agreement.
Accept all expenses (medical, feed, etc.)
Vaccinate the calf for:
a) Brucellosis before 8 months of age
b) 9-way
c) Clostridial
De-worm the animal annually (or more frequently if needed).
Keep accurate records of feeding and other management costs.

The Parent / Guardian Agrees to:

Cooperate with the committee and their child to the best interest of the program.
Attend the committee’s educational meeting(s) with their child.
Assist their child with management help when needed.
Cooperate with the steering committee when asked.
Review records of feeding and other management costs monthly with their child.
Assist child with transportation to shows.
The Breeder / Sponsor Agrees to:

Provide a 2 - 4 month old (September-December) 87.5% registered calf that meets the following
requirements:
a) AI proven sire or young sire at the discretion of the committee.
b) Dam has a ME lactation average at least the herd average ME (Official Test) (committee may
use the granddam record at its sole discretion).
c) Dam Johnes Negative
d) BVD PI Negative
Make the calf available to the participating member.
Sell the animal at a Holstein sale designated by the Steering Committee and split the sales proceeds
with the sponsor/breeder. If the participant chooses to purchase the animal 50% of proceeds will go
to the breeder. If the participant chooses to sell the animal to someone else, including the breeder,
proceeds will be split 60% breeder / 40% participant.
Be available to visit the member at least once every 6 months while this agreement is in force.
Breeder assumes the responsibility and cost of registering and transferring the calf to the participating
member.
Accept the decision of the committee in case of death, permanent disability, failure to breed, or
neglect.
Insure the calf against fire and storm.
All Parties Agree to:
That in the event a participating member does not fulfill his/her responsibilities and obligations under this
agreement, the Dairy Program Steering Committee may cancel said member’s participation and determine
settlement. In such case, the member and his/her parents agree that they will take no legal action nor make
any claim against either the Dairy Heifer Program Steering Committee, sponsor, or breeder.

Heifer Project Essay – please use a separate sheet
Topic: “Why I want a Registered Holstein Calf and What I will do with it.”
 Essay should be a minimum of 200 words.
 Entrant should include plans for housing, responsibilities or plans for caring for the calf, and show
opportunities in the essay.
 Program is open to youth ages 12 – 16 as of July 1 of application year.
 Entrant does not have to have a Holstein background or be from a Registered Holstein farm.
 Winner must exhibit the calf at fairs, shows, etc, for two years. Please see agreement form.
 Winner must give a report on the calf at the Clark County Junior Holstein banquet annual meeting
for two years.
 Winner must join the Wisconsin Junior Holstein Association.
 The program is open to Clark County youth only.
