Monday---Unit 14 Lesson 1 Skill: short u
Class will review that letter u is a vowel and that every word must contain a
vowel. Class will skywrite the letter u and give the sound for short u.
Teacher will place worksheet 14-5 under the document camera and students
will practice reading short u words by finger spelling and then teacher will
tap and sweep under the letters in the word while students provide sounds to
read the words. Then class will practice fluently reading words.
Teacher will place worksheet 14-7 under the document camera and students
will practice their short vowel discrimination by reading the words by finger
spelling and then teacher will tap and sweep under the letters in the word
while students provide sounds to read the words. Then class will practice
fluently reading words.
Teacher will place the story, “Mud” under the document camera. Students
will practice reading and discussing the story a couple of times. If needed,
finger spelling will be used on phonetic words and arm tapping will be used
on sight words. Students will then complete a short comprehension quiz on
worksheet over the story. These will be taken up and teacher will make sure
that students have their name and date on the quizzes.
Spell Tabs: Teacher will randomly choose 5 words from worksheet 14-7
(already been placed under the document camera and practiced today) to
dictate to students for them to write on notebook paper. Teacher will throw
out each word to students, use it in a sentence, and class will finger spell
word before writing the word on notebook paper. Teacher will take a couple
of these papers up for formative assessment notebook. Then students will go
over the words correctly.
Teacher will place the story, “Brad’s Hut” under the document camera.
Class will practice reading and discussing the story a couple of times. If
needed, finger spelling will be used on phonetic words and arm tapping on
sight words. This story will be sent home for reading homework.

Sentence Dictation: Teacher will dictate the following sentence to students:
The van is stuck in the mud. Students will repeat sentence and count the
number of words in the sentence. On notebook paper, students will write the
number of words in the sentence and will then start the sentence with a
capital letter. Each phonetic word will be finger spelled. Students will be
told that they can arm tap the sight words the and is if needed. Students will
be reminded to space between words and put the correct sentence stopper on
the end of the sentence. Teacher will take up a couple of papers to put into
formative assessment notebook. Then students will go over the sentence
correctly.

located on chalk ledge under the blue pocket chart.
Then teacher will display the words Mr. and Mrs. and state that Mr. stands
for the word mister. Mr. is an abbreviation. It starts with the first letter of
mister and ends with the last letter. To show it is an abbreviation it ends with
a period. Mrs. is also an abbreviation. It means a married lady. It also ends
with a period because it is an abbreviation.
Class will tap Mr. out on arm saying letter names and period. Then sweep
hand down arm saying the word Mr. Then class will tap Mrs. out on arm and
sweep down arm saying the word Mrs.
Teacher will pass out worksheet 14-13. Students will read given sentences
and use context clues to choose the correct word from the pair of words
given that makes sense in the sentence. Then class will read, go over, and
check/correct the worksheet. This worksheet will be sent home for reading
homework.

Students will practice reading and discussing the story a couple of times. If
needed, finger spelling will be used on phonetic words and arm tapping will
be used on sight words. This story will also be sent home for reading

be used for each phonetic word in each sentence before students write that
word. Arm tapping can be used on sight words if needed before students
write those words in each sentence. Students will be reminded to make sure
that they finger space between each word, that they have the correct number
of words in each sentence, and that they have placed the correct sentence
stopper on the end of each sentence. Teacher will take a couple of students’
papers up to place in formative assessment notebook. Then sentences will be
gone over correctly with students.
Teacher will place the Jeweled Treasure Box Unit Review worksheet 14-15
under the document camera. Students will practice reading words and
sentences a couple of times. Finger spelling may be used on phonetic words
and arm tapping on sight words. This worksheet will be sent home for
reading homework.
Teacher will place the story, “A Bad Trip” under the document camera.
Students will practice reading and discussing the story a couple of times.
Finger spelling will be used on phonetic words and arm tapping on sight
words if needed. This story will also be sent home for reading homework.

up, as teacher makes sure students have name and date on the assessment.
Teacher will then show students how to head a piece of notebook paper for a
spelling test. Students will do so and complete a spelling test on the
following words: us, mud, drum, such, truck, brush, shrub, stung, Mr., Mrs.
