Primary hip replacement surgery– non acute
Elective hip replacement only commissioned:
1. When the patient complains of:
 Severe joint or referred pain disrupting quality of life
AND
 Has functional limitation, despite use of non-surgical management such as adequate
doses of NSAID analgesia, weight management and physical therapies
AND
 Where the patient has potential to benefit from surgery
AND
 The patient has shown commitment to weight reduction through active participation in a
weight management programme if the patient’s BMI is >30
2. When the patient complains of:
 Mild to moderate joint pain
AND
 Has severe functional limitation, despite use of non-surgical management such as
adequate doses of NSAID analgesia, weight management and physical therapies
AND
 Surgical risk has been assessed as low
AND
 Patient has potential to benefit from surgery
AND
 The patient has shown commitment to weight reduction through active participation in a
weight management programme if the patient’s BMI is >30
